Computer Aided Design

This Week's Objective

Use different tools and techniques to draw in 2d & 3d

Tools Used in This Assignment

2D &3D Files

Inkskape

For the final project i was thinking of making a guitar. Thus in this assignment i decided to try and draw a guitar.
i used standered fret position as showen below.

i set the length of the neck 50 cm and worked my way from there.

incskape interface

i used the rulers to make guidelines and seperated them by the distances found previously.

using the curve drawing tool i traced the original guitar image and conected them with the neck. then i changed thier colors from fill and stroke option.

SolidWorks

I used the 2d drawing made in inskape as a referance to make a 3d model of the guitar using solidworks.

This is the interface of solidwork.

Since we had the 2d drawing i used built in feature in solidwork which is sketch picture. you can find it in by going to tool => sketch tools => sketch picture.

The first page showes the options to adjest the image. i chaged the dimentions to something realestic.

By clicing the arrow in the top left in the menu. it takes you to the trace option settings. i used the rectangle tool and selected the image. then i asked it to trace. i had to tweek the adjuesments to get the best possibale trace. then i clicked ok.

This is the traced drawing in 2d. i had to delete some lines and add some constrains like vertical lines and horizantel lines to fix the drawing.

Using the extrude option i extruded the body first then i extruded the neck to a different thikness.

I add some details to the guitar like the machine head and tune controlers. for the machine head i used the revolve option to make it 3d. then i used the linear patern to dublicat it on the head.

i added fillet feature on the eades of the guitar and from the appearance option i added different textures to the different parts of the guitar. then i rendered it using the 360 view add-in to export a render image of the drawing.

FreeCad

i want to use free cad to to model something using parametric design approch. except evrytime i opened the software it would crash before starting anything. for the sake of time i decided to go with fusion 360.

Fusion360

fusion 360 is autodesk's latest addition to thier family. it is at the level of solid work and is available free for educational purposes for three years. the software is cloud based and its good for colaboration. along with being CAD software it offers CAM workspace.the interface of the software is bretty good. everything you need you will find it on single page.
i looked online for pressfit project to try and replicate it.

i found this plane model it will help me see the effect of the parametric design and understand it better.
i first draw the aproximate fiqure of the plane mostly using line and arc sketch tool. i had to trip the interconected lines to form the final form of the model.

i used the dimention tool to set some constrains and add relations.

when i change the thikness of the material all the parts adject themselves to fit the new requirments.

Gimp

i made a logo using gimp. it is very usefull tool. it has some fetures just like photoshp. also both of them use raster image.
after making new page with my suitable size. i made new layer and used the elips select button to creat the circle.

to color the circle i used the gradient tool.

then again i made circle with smaller radius. then i cut it from the image.

then again i made circle with smaller radius. then i colored with gradient tool.

i made new layer behind the previous one and made a black circle using same steps as before.

then on new layer i wrote a text then i changed it to selection as showen below.

then deleted the text layer and only thing we have is the selection. then from the previous layer i cut the selection.

to add some effects i used the engrave option.

here is the final logo

Final Thoughts

Although personaly and prefessionaly i use solidworks all the time it has all the features to enable you to truly almost make anything the only disadvantage i would say is that is price is quite expencive for normal users. if i am to recomend a software i feel i will go with fusion 360. it is the best option both for new users and experts, it has range of tools and features and can be used very well for 2d and 3d design add to that its very user friendly. on top of that its free for students and instructers (for 3 year). gimp is not very easy to use but again its very powerfull vector 2d design tool i use it for making the icons in my website page also for changing images size that i use in the documentation.
