Week 13

April 10. Applications and Implications

Individual Assignment

Propose a final project masterpiece that integrates the range of units covered, answering the questions provided

What will it do?

  • It will be ba scenario that comunicates with an app which tells a story from the point of view of a narrator located on the scenario. There will be at least two different narrators to be identified. It will contain subtitles to help ids learn to read. The scenario will be able to identify which narrator is used and communicate with the app to start telling the story from that narratorĀ“s point of view.
  • On a second phase, probably not by the time fab academy ends, the app wil be in different languages to help kids learn a second language.

Who's done what beforehand?

  • My inspiration comes from Museum in a Box, I added the app as a background for the narrator.
  • The difference lies in the app to tell a story,as well as the use in helping young kids to learn to read, and on a second phase learn a new language.

What will you design?

  1. Design the mobile app's look and feel.
  2. Code the app from scratch, at this point I'm thinking of coding it for iPad.
  3. Electronics Input, identify which narrator is being used.
  4. Electronics Output, communicating via bluetooth with the iPad to send information to the app.
  5. Narrators, I'm still definining if I'll use molding and casting or 3D Printing.
  6. Box to serve as scenario and to hold the narrators, electronics and as an iPad stand.

What materials and components will be used? Where will they come from? How much will they cost?

Material Source Cost Comments
Pine Wood local shop $ 36 USD
Microcontroller Fab Lab Puebla Stock $ 2.65 USD
Pins Fab Lab Puebla Stock $ 8.32 USD
Magnetic Identifier Fab Lab Puebla Stock $b 2.50 USD
Low Density Bluetooth Fab Lab Puebla Stock $ 9.41 USD
LED Stock $ 1.22 USD
iPad Apple N/A Pre-Owned by FabLab Puebla

What parts and systems will be made?

Part / System Comments
Scenario/Box Will be designed and cutted using a press fit techniches
Electronics Designed
Mobile App Design and coding will be done in-house by me.
Narrators The characters will be designed in 3D and printed, there is a strong possibility to use molding and casting for cheaper reproduction afterwards.

What processes will be used?

  • Project Management
  • Computer-Aided Design
  • Computer-Controlleed Cutting, as well as Machining
  • Electronics Design, inputs, outputs and communications
  • Embedded Programming
  • 3D Printing
  • Molding and Casting
  • Interface and Application Programming

What questions need to be answered?

  • Are the materials the correct ones for children?
  • Is the selected story the right one to start?
  • Does the combination of a device, a narrator and a mobile app actually help kids to learn?
  • Is story telling, in order to learn to read, the only application (or even the right one) for this device?
  • Is making the electronics from design to construction, the best approach?
  • Is making it compatible for android a better approach for the next phase instead of adding different languages?
  • Is starting with iPad the right choice for the mobile app?

How will it be evaluated?

  • Communication between the box/scenario with tha mobile app.
  • Change of narrators, changes the perspective of the narrative.
  • Synchronization of audio and subtitles.
  • Finishing touches on the scenario/box.
  • Finishing touches on the narrators.

The project I'm working on is planned to be an individual project as of today.
