My main goal for this week was to сut something on the vinylcutter, design, lasercut, and document a parametric press-fit construction kit, and document everything. First thing was to describe our equipment

  • VENO 530 laser cutter (60W, 500*300mm, 128 Mb RAM)

  • Mimaki CG-130SR plotter

Laser Cutting

I decided to create something practical, for example a lampshade

First I designed press-fit kit element in Fusion 360

Trying to combine

And also I designed element which will be the side of the lampshade

Export side of solid body to SVG and opened it in Inkscape

And then, finally, the most interesting!

After some experiments with parameters, I set the speed of laser cutter as 15mm/sec and the power to 75% (might be more, but we have 60W tube, it is pretty powerful to cut even 10mm plywood on low speed). As material I chose 4mm plywood, it’s cheap and eco

However, plywood was not ideal, so some detail was really hard to combine, but I took into accound width of the laser flow (approx 0.1mm) and add some spacing to perpendicular cuts

Now magic is here

Plotting stickers

In order to pass countour to the plotter, I was needed to create vector lines around logo. I created it with Adobe Illustrator quite easily.

Red line here is line to cut. Plotter first reads specials marks, which were printed on the vinyl, and then start to cut
