Computer controlled machining

individual assignment : explained how you made your files. second idea: space shelve

WHAT IM TRYING TO MAKE. DESIGN MOTIVATIONS

The shelves are made to hold books, but sometimes there are empty shelves. The purpose of this work is to manufacture a bookcase as furniture (not attached to the wall) capable of fulfilling its function, but at the same time raising the interest of generating an interesting space when it does not contain books. This work is based on the work and ideas of the architect Gordon Matta Clarck

CAD DESIGN PROCESS

Due to the complexity of the space to be formed, this work is developed entirely in Grasshopper for Rhino. in this way, the position of the voids in the shelf can be considered in real time without the need to continuously make intersections in the different necessary tests

DESIGN PREPARATION FOR CUTTING

CNC CUTTING

UPDATE PARAMETERS

tool used : end mill (6mm)

diameter (6mm)

pass depth 2.5mm

stepover 2.4 mm (50%)

spindle speed 11000 rpm

feed rate 4000 mm/min)

plunge rate : 1200 mm/min

tool used :upcut

UPDATE conventional cut or climb cut

the milling is done in climb cut, not only by the tool chosen, but by the advantages and disadvantages recognized in different tutorials such as

FINAL ASSEMBLY

UPDATE dogbone or gaps

Of course I have taken into account the problem of the boards in the realization of this work. I have considered making dogbones to make sure that the cut profile of the tool does not affect the joints as can be seen in the kerf tests.
In this I followed the considerations of the fablab ruc tutorial where a way to get more elegant finishes using dog bone is specified. However consulted by a professional explains that given the flexibility of the material and its compression capacity is not as necessary the use of dog bone in a material like MDF 10mm.
So I find myself in the decision to operate between a solution of butt joints but with the very unfavorable effects of dog bone in each cut or count in the design with a small gap in the joints that according to professionals can be closed with the time due to humidity and use.
On the other hand in the design of the shelf and since it has 3-piece meetings at some point it is very possible that a minimum gap would appear, so consider very seriously to have a separation between the pieces as a fundamental part of the design.
