I am Svanur Kristjansson. I am a Librarian and school bus driver in Holmavik, a village on Iceland's Westfjords peninsula. I have no background in any of the Fab academy's subjects, but I am keen to get acquainted with them. I am interested in reprocessing waste materials into new raw materials, at my village there is a comprehensive recycling program where it is easy to see the amount of potentially valuable stuff that gets recycled - much of it gets shipped overseas and incinerated for energy production. Our remote shores are exposed to winds and currents that bring colossal amounts of plastics, the types we see are those that float and have not been broken down into tiny fragments yet, it is not economically viable to gather them from the more remote areas, but some great work is done regularly by volunteers. I would like to draw inspiration from projects like Precious plastics and Bureo and capture some of that steady stream of treasure that otherwise would get shipped away or ground into microplastics along our shores. In the Fab academy I would like to build the necessary skills to add value to those reconstituted materials and perhaps inspire the pupils at my primary school to follow suit.
