Assignment 20
6.6.2018
Project development
Goals of this week:
- Complete your final project, tracking your progress: LINK
- Answer to this week´s questions
Answers to final questions
What are the deadlines for the project?
Week assigment deadline is 11.6.2018 and final project deadline is 20.6.2018. Therefore, I have one week until the week assigment deadline and two weeks before the final project deadline.
What tasks have been completed?
The following tasks have been completed before 11.6.2018:
- Modular frame piece
- Frame details (frames, colored pieces)
- A modular part connector piece
- Basic Frame
- Few different modular designs (Paper, Fabric)
- Board with a light-sensor board as an Input
What tasks remain?
The following tasks remains after 11.6.2018:
- Inner part of the frame
- RGB-LED output board
- Holders for electric parts
- Documentation and visual stuff
How the remaining tasks are finished before 20.6.2018 presentation?
- 11.6-14.6: RGB-LED output board and electric part holders are created and assembled
- 14.6-18.6: Inner part of the frame is created and basic documentation and visual stuff is finished
- 18.6-20.6 Extra additions are and fixes are needed if everything else is done
What has worked?
The following plans have been completed successfully before 11.6.2018:
- Sewing the frame together
I had problems to attach frame pieces together and decided to use sewing. It turned to be time consuming but effective method to achieve my goals.
- Creating frame design by using Geodecim calculator
When I learned that Geodecim calculators exist, I wanted to use them to build my helmet. After using them to create correct design and measurements, I was able to create geodecim helmet that fitted my own head.
- Attaching modular pieces to frame with magnets
- Using paper to decorate frames
- Use light sensor to measure changes in the environment
- Using Birchwood as a material
What has not worked?
The following plans haven´t been successfully before 11.6.2018:
- Painting the frame pieces
I tried to paint the frame. The painting was success but the end result didn´t fullfilled my requirements. Painted frame smelled and looked bad and made pieces less flexible. Therefore, I gave up the painting process and used paper to create odorless and beautiful frames.
- Using magnetic tape and other alternative methods to connects modular pieces to frame
I tested multipe different options to attach modular pieces to helmet. Even thou magnet tape would be nices material to use, it was not strong enough to hold the weight of modular piece. To fix this, I used metal washers and ferromagnets instead to create attachments.
- Using only one shape to create the frame
First frame pieces I designed were made of one kind of triangles that were easy to print and put together. However, This structure was not flexible enough and created ugly mitters. To fix this, I used two kinds of triangles for my pieces to increase flexibility and better looking mitters around the edgges.
What questions need to be resolved
- Is there a way and if there is, what is the best way to make a polygon
pattern around the 3d model to create unique frames from the 3d model of user´s head?
- How the helmet could be designed so that the user could build it from
scratch with a minimal amount of tools?
How the project will proceed in future
The project will continue in future by:
- Defining a way to create and modify unique frames around 3d modeled heads
- Design helmet so that it is easy to assemble
- Trying to read head movements, voice commands, etc. with the helmet
- Developing the possibilities with the electronics
In the end, what I have learned during this course?
I have learned a lot and could write it all down, but for a sake of simplicity, I summarize everything to few points:
- You can learn basics of new and difficult things quickly, but you have
to put a lot of work into it = LEARN BY DOING
- Use people´s knowledge efficiently to patch your own shortcomings
= LEARN BY LEARNING FROM OTHERS
- By getting yourself deep into the topic so that you can see the results of
your work, you find the motivation and thrive,
not the other way around = THRIVE BY DOING
