Applications and Implications
Assignment 18
- Propose a final project masterpiece that integrates the range of units covered,
answering the questions highlighted in the documentation:
What will it do?
All the time during my Engineerig degree, and during this fab academy diploma, I really felt the need of making a project like this.I am making a Wire Cutter, which has the capability of cutting a desired number of wires of specific length. You give the input through buttons, the length of wire and number of peices that you want to cut, the data is displayed on LCD and your job is done within seconds by the servo and the cutter attached at the end.
Who's done what beforehand?
Following tasks are completed:
- The LCD circuit for displaying the input given by the user
- The Arduino Leonardo for controling the stepper, servo and LCD .
- The 3D printed parts are ready
- The acrylic base is ready
- Programming is done to check if the wire cutter cuts the desired number of wires of the given length
Folllowing tasks are Remaining
- Operating the Stepper motor to extrude the wire
What will you design?
As discussed above, I want to make a wire cutter, since it is really an important tool for out lab and its not avialable here. This project will include all the necessary skills learnt so far; 3D printing, Laser Cut, Electronics Production, Embedded Programming, Input and Output Devices. The Wire cutter will be capable of cutting the specified number of wires of the given length.
What materials and components will be used?
- Acrylic sheet-3mm as Base plate for placing the project onto it.
- Stepper motor and Extruder
- A4988 Stepper driver
- Servo motor
- 16 by 2 LCD Display
- Arduino Leonardo
- Push buttons - 4
- 10kohm Potentiometer
- 3D printed parts to grip the cutter
Where will come from?
Almost all of the materials were avialbale in the inventory of our lab, so with the permissions from the concerned authority , I used all the components mentioned above present in the lab. This makes my job bit easier since I did not need to worry about the availability of any component.
What parts and systems will be made?
- Electronics: The PCBs- mainboard of Leonardo and the circuit for input and displaying on the LCD
- Laser Cut: The White Acrylic base for Project
- 3D Prinitng: The 3D printed parts for holding the wire cutter
- Input DEvices: For giving the data required for number of wires and the length of wire
- Output Devices: LCD Display for showing the given inpput
- Programming: All the programming required for motors and LCD display
How much will they cost?
- 5Volt1A 4-Phase Unipolar Stepper Motor: $17.95
What processes will be used?
- 3D modeling using Solidworks: Supporting parts of the cutter
- Electronics: PCB designing of Leonardo board, and Input Output board
- Laser Cut: Acrylic base cutting
- 3D Printing: Parts for cutter
- Programming: Showing the process, and extruding the wire properly
What questions need to be answered?
I need to find a solution to one problem; the movement of extruder. I need to sort out why the Stepper is not extruding the wire to cutter properly. Apart from this, all other parts of my project are working well.
How will it be evaluated?
My project will be evaluated on the following parts:
- Showing that the Input and Output works fine
- The wire cuts as per the given length and number of pieces to be cut.
- The Wire is being extruded properly without any delay
