Week5：3D scanning and printing

About the scan object

60 years ago, Tang De-Jhang had been kill by the military during 228 Incident. The location of his death is near by Fablab Tainan(about 100M away) and Tainan city government set up a statue to commemorate his death. In this week, I decided to scan his statue and trying to print-it.

Structure sensor and skanect

• install structure sensor on the ipad air
• install Skanet on the PC/MAC
• put the ipad and the pc in the same wifi network
• open Structure app and switch to 'Uplink' mode
• click 'Rec' to start scaning.

• slowly move the scanner.

• note: if you need a better angle for scaning, remember to prepare a 'strong' chair....

Meshmixer

• install Meshmixer
• Note: OSX version can download the missing files(parts/models) from here
• use 'Transform' to rotate the model, use 'Plane Cut' to set the cutting surface to remove the unwanted part.
• 'Make solid' to fill the hole
• 'Sculpt' to do the little trimming.
• export to .stl file.

Print it

it takes about 1 hr to print it out.

design the dart for the final projtct

• I try to make use openSCAD darts

• Use the function:

  • "Translate" setting element placement
  • "Intersection" the two are joined together round caudal fin
  • "Cylinder" column, you can set the upper size with size below
  • "Rotate" the rotation to the specified location
  • "Sphere" put a ball in the end darts
  • "Difference" will be placed at the bottom of darts magnet hollowed
