Diary - Thoughts and experiences

This week I was getting acquainted with a new laser cutter machine, I've never worked on before. This is a consequence of Epilog laser-cutter's malfunction. The substitute we have at the MISIS's fablab is called "GCC LaserPro Spirit GX" (the one presented on the picture).

Compared to Epilog, it is a much bigger machine, but at the same time it has some individual traits for cutting - the focus for the laser beam is smaller and it is better suited for engraving rather than cutting. That said I had a lot of problems with cutting cardboard - seems funny, but this machine is not capable of getting a quick and high quality cut on this material. The problem is that cardboard is double-sided with some space between the two sides, adding the smaller focus results in burning cardboard on the bottom side, rather than cutting it. Other materials, like acrylic glass and wood, are cut fine though.
