This week I choose to make a project I first saw in the Fablab in Mahtomedi, Minnesota, a press fit chair. I began by downloading sketchchair (www.sketchchair.cc/). I found this program to be less than stable and a bit finicky to use. Some of the example designs are awesome, I was able to do a basic design of a chair but nothing near the examples. The directions as to what each of the buttons and icons do are very limited and tutorials seem to be nonexistent. The output of sketchchair is in pdf format, I used Illustrator to convert into a dxf format that could be imported into Partworks. One of the toughest part of the design was getting the slot size correct, I created several samples and finally settled on 11.5 mm. Cutting on the Shopbot was pretty straight forward and simple. I choose bc plywood, which was a mistake. This type of plywood did not hold up to the hammering of assembly which caused a few pieces to brake and the backrest is very unstable, one piece even broke while being cut out. I was surprised to discover that the chair was closer to a child size than adult size. In the sketchchair design program a ‘human’ animation sits on the chair to test the design, I just assumed that the animation was an adult. Despite all of the problems I enjoyed this project.
