05 3d Scanning And Printing

And here we are. During this week we are going to work with 3D Scanning and printing! We are going to scan ourselves by using the Xbox Kinect (shown below) and the software hack ReconctructMe.

ReconstructMe is a 3d recontruction system which helps your kinect's infrared camera to capture objects and place them in 3 demonsions to your digital world! Click on the logo of ReCo  to visit theirs website for more information and their gallery.

The Kinect and Reco create scans which very often need improvement before you will be able to send it to a 3d printer. I used Netfabb and Meshlab to close all surface holes and make a flat bottom of the model. Netfabb is a great free software which has an automatic repair function (very, very usefull!). Meshlab also has a great library of filters which allowes you to smooth your model and that will give you much better result during 3d prinitng.

One of the most exciting parts of this week was scanning and printing objects which I found in my home! First I scanned delicious bananas and I repaired the model in Meshmixer. Later on I scaled down 3d object and I printed it using beautiful red ABS.

After trying on my banana earings I was excited to find anything else to scan. The first thing I saw were a pair of shoes (which I think came out great!). I have repeated all processes, I scanned the shoe using my a DSLR and an hour later I had the printed shoe attached to my keys.

Earings

I designed several more earings:) I didnt have time to print them all but for sure I am going to do this in near future.
