What will it do?

This project consists of an advanced, low-latency electronic conversion kit designed to upgrade a standard skateboard into a high-performance motorized vehicle. The system allows an operator to wirelessly pilot a heavy-duty 5060 brushless motor (140 KV) using a custom handheld remote control. The hand controller monitors throttle positioning and transmits input parameters via RF data packets directly to a powertrain receiver node fastened securely beneath the vehicle chassis.

Who's done what beforehand?

Commercial electric skateboard conversion kits exist on the market (such as Mellow Drive or Unlimited x Loaded), and DIY electric skateboarding communities widely implement open-source VESC speed controllers. However, this implementation creates an integrated closed ecosystem built on cost-effective XIAO ESP32-C6 RISC-V microcontrollers utilizing localized peer-to-peer ESP-NOW protocols rather than standard, congested Bluetooth connections, making custom telemetry and control layers entirely modular.

What sources will you use?

Technical Datasheets: In-depth analysis of the Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32-C6 pinouts, ESP-NOW protocol communication boundaries, the AMS1117 3.3V low-dropout regulator, and the hardware UART configuration requirements for VESC data structures.
Software Repositories: VESC UART open-source C++ libraries, Arduino IDE core frameworks, and Adafruit I2C OLED display libraries for hardware rendering interfaces.

What will you design?

  • Mechanical Shells: 3D CAD modeling of the handheld ergonomic remote enclosure with precise component tolerances.
  • Structural Powertrain: Custom wooden/MDF protective vehicle enclosure box and rigid structural timber motor mounting plates to align the belt transmission.
  • Electronics: Routing and design of two independent PCBs: a transmitter motherboard and a receiver node module.

What parts and systems will be made?

Structural System: 3D printed PLA handheld transmitter housing and a rugged CNC-machined or laser-cut large wood/MDF enclosure to protect the battery and speed controller under the deck, attached securely using a high-tensile overlapping Velcro strap system.
Electronic System: Fabrication and population of the handheld transmitter board (integrating the XIAO, joystick, and OLED screen with 10µF filtering capacitors and an AMS1117 3.3V regulator), alongside a standalone receiver board that bridges wireless data straight to the VESC mini controller over wire links.
Transmission System: Assembly of a custom 2:1 ratio timing gear reduction drive using a 15-tooth motor pulley and a 30-tooth wheel hub pulley connected by a 250mm long, 15mm thick HTD5M timing belt.

What processes will be used?

The realization of this masterpiece integrates: 2D and 3D CAD modeling, PCB trace milling and structural soldering, Additive Manufacturing (3D filament printing for remote ergonomics), Subtractive Manufacturing (timber and MDF milling for rugged enclosures and plates), and Embedded C++ firmware optimization for real-time serial stream processing.

What questions need to be answered?

1. RF Reliability: Can the ESP-NOW communication maintain stable latency under 15ms despite electromagnetic interference from the 140kv 5060 motor?
2. Drive Alignment: Is the motor mount capable of maintaining constant tension on the 15T and 30T HTD5M pulleys without belt skipping under high torque?

CRITERIA 01

RF Latency & Control
