Week_05:

3D printing and scanning assignment:

 • design, document, and 3D print an object that
   could not be made subtractively
 • 3D scan an object (and opionally print it)

For this assignment I will make a print in place animal

I used to print these as souvinirs for kids at Paju Engilish village so I want to make my own to give to my students

I will be making a snake to keep it simple and I will be using F360

Step 1

make the base geometry sketch

round up the corners using the fillet tool so it can move smoothly

Screenshot 2026-02-25 at 18.07.30.jpg

you can do this for the whole design if you want

Step 2

extrude the shape

I like to extrude this design using symmetric direction to save time

Screenshot 2026-02-25 at 18.13.20.jpg

Start with the middle section then extrude the hinge joint

Screenshot 2026-02-25 at 18.14.24.jpg

then extrude the outer section and use the sketch to cut out the slot using the cut fucntion and the symmetric direction

you should have an interlocking section something like this. you can adjust to your preference

Duplicate it and move it into place, make sure its perfectly centred to ensure movement in the joints after its printed

I did a test print and was unsatisfied with the joint movement

Screenshot 2026-02-25 at 18.39.28.jpg

I increased the slot hole diameter by 0.2 and lengthened the conecting arm

step 3

add a tail and head

I duplicated the sketch data and edited them to be a tail and head section and then extruded in the same method as the middle sections

I also increased the thickness of the connector arms for durability and sliced it in the Bambu lab slicer with standard settings

the print came out perfectly with only minor fraying on the underside of the overhangs but there was still good movement in the joints

you can make the snake longer by simply adding more middle pieces
