Week2 Computer Aided Design

Homework

Target

try muliple types of CAD, Both 2D and 3D

2D tools: INKscape (Inkscape) and GIMP (Raster )

3D tools: FreeCAD and on shape

final project model

compress image and videos to upload

requirement: document work with images and videos, and post a description with design file.

Assignment

2D Tool - Inkscape trying

basic operation from Gemini

Radom trying all the function module on the left bar

My work of 2D by inkcape, a painting of Minimalist Painting

My work of 2D by Inkscape, a shape of Comb.

The dimenation of the Comb, 200 x 100 mm; the handle is 200 x 50mm; the teeth" 5 x 50mm"

Step1 draw an rectangle of 200 x 50 mm as the handle

Step 2 draw the first teeth and aligning with "magnet"

Step3, Colone the teeths

but a new problems comes, as above the end is empty, not a teeth, that is a mathematical problem, adjust the handle to align them.

Step 4.Merge into a whole (Boolean operation), emerge the teeth - emerge the whole

With the SVG file, I could use the cutting machine to cut the comb.

SVG file: comb.svg

2D tool trying - GIMP (Raster)

Raster picture as showed below

Reaster looks like Photoshop, currently, I don't feel I might use it for my projects, if required, I will keep updated some later.

3D tool - FreeCAD

Try FreeCAD to make a box, followed the video: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1d7CJB9Evr/?share_source=copy_web

Install the FreeCAD

Step 1 200 x 160 mm X-Y plane

Step 2.a box with extrude

Step 3. Part design- pocket

step 4. Add partition bar

attention: the edge of bar need to reach the inner side of the box 注意横线需要超过边缘的线

Add one more inner wall

The internal bevel of the box

The outside bevel of the box

Add color

3D file by FreeCAD: wk2-box-3d-Body.3mf

3D Tool - Onshape

Registration

Following the video to learn how to use the onshape to build the model as below: Onshape 3D建模入门教程 - 学习Onshape_哔哩哔哩_bilibili

Step 1 - Design the 2D first

Step 2. Extrude,heighth 15 mm

step 3. extrude another cube.

step 4. add a Slope

Step 5. add a hole

Step 6. Add a mashroom

File: Onshape

Conclusion on 2D & 3D tool

I only tried Inscape & GIMP as 2D tools, and FreeCAD and Onshape as 3D tools. here is my feel preference:

2D, I like Inscape, it is a vector 2D tool, it will be more suitable for cutting, while GIMP, with the introduction video I watched, it is more like photo shop. for my final project later, I might need GIMP to make some Emojis

3D, I spend many hours to follow yotubers to make their models with 2 tools, 1 box by Freecad, and one model with the marshroom with Onshape. I prefer Onshape. the interface is more clear, and logical, which makes me feel easy to build the 3D model. one probable reason may be, it the version of Free Cad, I used is 1.0.2, but the yotuber using the video is V1.0.0, the interface is different. More, Onshape is online tools, more convenient, I feel. for my finnal project I will use the OnShape.

My final project - 3D enclosure by Onshape

Concept image from Gemini

hand draft

Draft 3D model

onshape 3D file of final project: Onshape

It looks hard to make a ideal 3D model aligning with my idea, with my current capability. in the final project, I will simplify the encloure to be a cube.

Image compress

Recommend by Gemini, I find a good tool for image compress, Squoosh

see the piture, from 7.05 MB to 101 KB,
