01. Principles & Practices

Plan and sketch a potential final project

Project

Across industries like production & formula one, visual tool control is a major factor in ensuring internal standards with effective & efficient processes. These practices are used to keep production lines compliant, the correct tools accessible & prevent missed placed items. Maintaining equipment records & performing item auditing is prone to human error, if done at all. Common practice employs duel coloured foam, with a black layer on top & coloured below. Equipment outlines are digitally traced which are used to create pockets when the foam is CNC milled to produce a drawer insert. When the coloured foam is exposed, the user knows at a glance, an items missing. This system is limited when it comes to managing the big picture, it requires line of site & pre-existing knowledge of what should be there.

Existing

  • Specialist tool cabinets that perform self auditing through sensors, cameras or rfid e.g. kabTRAK, snap-on, cykeno
  • DIY plastic organisers & tear away foam e.g. gridfinity, toolgrid, shadow foam
  • Custom foam & refined solutions e.g. coplan, toolbox widget

Concept

Using a pressure sensor array combined with tool housing to create a drawer insert that can be fitted into existing toolboxes & register when items are not present

Potential pathways to development considering the concept of achieving a MVP (minimal viable product) before pushing further. These will be revisited & adapted as I deepen my understanding of feasibility in the time frame.
