3D scanning and printing
Group assignments
- test the design rules for your 3D printer(s)
My group assignments
Individual Assignments
- design and 3D print an object (small, few cm3, limited by printer time) that could not be made subtractively
- 3D scan an object (and optionally print it)
Have you answered these questions?
- Linked to the group assignment page
- Explained what you learned from testing the 3D printers
- Documented how you designed and 3D printed your object and explained why it could not be easily made subtractively
- Documented how you scanned an object
- Included your original design files for 3D printing
- Included your hero shots
PC working environment
- PC: MacBook Pro(16-inch,2019)
- OS: Sonoma 14.7.2
- Terminal: zsh
hero shot
The sphere is an object that cannot be subtracted because it is inside a square box.

3D printing
This time, Voron0 was used for printing. Specs are listed in group
1.Design and 3D Printing
Forms that cannot be created by subtractive processing... Making a sphere in a square can't be done by subtractive processing...! and printed the following object. To create an object (sphere) inside by subtractive processing, the outer square must be eliminated. Therefore, this cannot be created by subtractive processing.

Apply this to all sides.
1.10 Output STL data (go to Utilities>Create>3dprint)
2.slicer
The slicer is used to convert the 3D model into G-code that the printer can understand, create layers and optimize print settings. Slicer settings are suitable for material ELEGOO PLA filament 1.75mm.
- Filament setting
Temperature Extruder : 220 Temperature bed : 60
2.0 New project
2.1 Slicer execution
2.2 Exporting G-code
3.Printing
Calibration of machines and filaments is already done at West-Harima
3.0 The interface preheats the “heater bed” at a temperature appropriate for each material.
3.1 Upload G-code file and start job
3.2 Once the printout is complete, wait until the temperature is around 30°C before removing the object.
This time I was able to print it successfully, but in fact, I have made this mistake in the past. This happened while creating Otto, which is open source.
It seems like the first layer didn't stick well, and ended up looking like spaghetti on top! Next, I added brim and printed it, but the results weren't very good. This shows how important it is to make sure the first layer is firmly attached.
-Countermeasures-
- Attach a brim
- Change the object's orientation
3D scan
4.Polycam
Fab Lab West harima does not have a 3D scanner. Therefore, for 3D scanning, use Polycam on your smart phone my smart phon : iphon-13 Pro Object
-
A ring, one of my treasures.
-
eraser

LiDAR -> LiDAR stands for “Light Detection And Ranging,” a technology that emits laser light and measures the distance to an object and its shape based on the information from the reflected light. Devices such as the iPhone 12 Pro or later and the iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation) or later have built-in LiDAR sensors, and by selecting the LiDAR mode in the app, measurements can be made more quickly and accurately. 4.0 Download First, download the Polycam application to your smartphone。
Can be installed for free from the App Store, and up to 10 3D scans can be made with the free plan.
4.1 scan
This time I selected auto, which automatically releases the shutter, and took pictures while changing the angle little by little!
Capable of taking a minimum of 20 pictures and a maximum of 150 pictures
However, the scan failed when the object was moved or scanned at only certain angles. The shot was successful when the object was not moved and taken from all directions. Failure example ↓
4.2 Export Files
Select and export video (MP4) The following video is the result. Not in exact shape, but I think it looks pretty good!

impressions
- The printer I used this time had a short printing time, so I felt it was useful when I wanted to create something quickly.
- I almost got the filament tangled up in the middle of printing, so I had to make sure it was set properly.
- The 3D scan (Polycam) is really amazing. I thought it was beginner-friendly because you can do it with just one phone.
- I found it hard to scan accurately where the light was reflecting or when the object and the floor were the same color.
