computer-controlled cutting
Group assignments
- do your lab's safety training
- characterize your lasercutter's focus, power, speed, rate, kerf, joint clearance and types
My group assignments
west-harima week-assignments 03
Individual Assignments
- Design, lasercut, and document a parametric construction kit, accounting for the lasercutter kerf, which can be assembled in multiple ways.
- Cut something on the vinyl cutter.
Have you answered these questions?
- Demonstrate and describe parametric 2D modelling processes.
- Identify and explain processes involved in using the laser cutter.
- Develop, evaluate and construct a parametric construction kit.
- Identify and explain processes involved in using the vinyl cutter.

1. Shaper Utilities
The Shaper Utilities Add-In for Fusion 360 has lots of functions to export as SVG not only from Sketch but also from body, etc.
1.0 download Go to AUTODESK App Store and download “Shaper Utilities” Mac OS.
1.1 Open and install the downloaded file
2.Deepnest
Deepnest is open source nesting (part placement) software designed primarily for laser cutting and CNC cutting. It can efficiently place multiple parts on a material to minimize material waste.
2.0hereinstall
3.SmartDIYs Creator
SmartDIYs Creator is a platform that provides tools and resources for DIY projects and fabrication
3.0 heredownload
3.1 Open and install the downloaded file
4.Create SVG files(Design)
Based on the team's results, the design was created using Fusion360.(clearance 3.4mm)
4.0 Open Fusion data file
4.1 Select Utilities
4.2 Export to Origin
4.3 Select the top face and click “OK"
You can now download the SVG file!
5.Edit SVG files
5.0 Import SVG files in Inkscape (or Illustrator)
5.1 Edit stroke section
6.opening sentence or paragraph
6.0 Open Deepnest and import the file you want to cut.
Add the sheet at this time as well. Fill in and add the actual material values to be used. Once added, check the box and enter the quantity needed.
memo) For some reason, when I imported a SVG file created in Inkscape, the shape changed. I tried using Illustrator to test it and it worked!
6.1 Select the data you want to output from the imported files.
6.2 Click start nest
6.3 It will automatically line up and when it is done, select the SVG file from Export.
7.cut
I have cut the parts of the parametric construction kit with the following values.
- Using FABOOL Laser CO2
- power : 20%, speed : 1250 mm/min, time : 2(See results of group assignment)

9.Machine I use
Spec: - Attachable paper size(*1 ): 304.8 mm (12inch) / 215.4mm (LETTER) / 210 mm (A4)
-
cut Speed: Max 100 mm/s
-
cut pressure: Max 2.1 N (210 gf)
-
Number of pens that can be attached: 2
-
Cuttable materials:
-
[Film] Thickness 0.1 mm or less (excluding high-intensity reflective film)
-
[Paper] Kent paper 157 g / m2, drawing paper, postcards, scrapbooking paper, inkjet photo paper, basil paper, 0.5 mm thick paper, inkjet photo paper, basil paper, 0.5 mm thick paper
-
OS: Windows 10 / 8.1, Mac OS X 10.10 and upwards
(*1 : Supported by pinch roller switching)
10.silhouettestudio and cut
Silhouette Studio is Silhouette's design software for cutting machines. It allows users to create graphic designs and provide instructions for cutting them out on a cutting machine.
10.0 hereinstall The version I installed:Silhouette Studio for Mac Ver.4.5.196
10.1 Outline with Inkscape, and export with DXF file
10.2 Import DXF file to Silhouettestudio.(If size change, do it this )
I decided to make two at a time so I could fail at this point
10.3 Set the material (follow the datum line)
If the material is not good position, Loosen the fixing knob and reset the material to the correct position.
10.4 Set initial settings (blade out, cutting pressure, path, speed) and Test cut.
in my case↓
10.5 Push sending data through USB code, and Cut the film (cutting sheet).
10.6 Remove unwanted parts
10.7 Transfer
I use Transfer paper.
Be careful not to let air in.
Transfer logo to PC is complete.

Impressions
- This week was a busy week for me as I was away from home for three days for a school event!
- The laser cutter is convenient, but I learned that it is dangerous because it can catch fire.
- I think the space between the parts I made was a little narrow.I considered it an appropriate value because it did not fall out when I shook it, but I thought it should be a little wider because it was hard when I fitted it.
