5. 3D Scanner

Hero Shot of the Week

Code for Model viewer from Forrest.
Imported STL into blender than exported into GLG.

Summary

This week I learned how to scan objects. I have found that smaller the object the harder to scan is.

Also I broke and repaired the 3D scanner 😅

Also I broke my git repo size with this 3D scanned object viewer 😢
My previous biggest file was a zip (681 KB) 🙃

Work Process

Manual and DL page for the CR-Scan Ferret Pro 3D Scanner.

Breaking & Repairing

I broke the Scanner. More precisely its Wifi addon. I tried to unplug the USB from it but it did not want to come out. I might have used more force than needed to get it out. The plastic part of the middle of the female USB-C came out... Only the plastic part...

Broken

All the pins are still in the socket. So when I plug it in it still works...

I contacted Repair Together who are a collaborators of our FabLab. Fortunately two of them where present (one of who did the FabAc). And they also had a simple USB-C female replacement. As only current passes through that USB I did not needed to do micro soldering and could just solder the two cable to the motherboard. The motherboard having two nice little spot for it.

Motherboard

And now it is repaired.

Repaired

It is good enough for me.

Scanning

So I scanned my hand. There is a small learning curve to get when you are at the good distance and how to get the little missing pockets. But overall it is not that complicated. If you like repeating the process because you did not see that you missed a part.

Try 1

My first try was the keyboard I was using.

Keyboard

Not great. Even with the little stickers it has issues. I guess there is to much repeating pattern.

Try 2

I scanned my hand. It wasn't easy. (Some yoga was required.)

Hand

It has an okay results. There are some artifacts and ghost parts. But in overall it isn't that bad.

Try 3

Here is my try of scanning a 3D Printer Test.

Printer Test

Not great.
We can't even see the layers.

I tried again. My laptop does not have enough RAM to process it with the settings I put in XD.

Learning Outcome

I once tried to use a different 3D scanner but quickly gave up. That one was way more frustrating to use than this one.

But it is still a little hard to use. always looking out for the right distance. Trying to get back the tracking. At least it tells us how to try and correct the process.

But final edit is still needed. I never got a scan without having some phantom points.

    • I do not know why you would need my hand but here it is...
