Electronics Design

Group Assignment:

  • use the test equipment in your lab to observe the operation
    • of a microcontroller circuit board

Individual Assignment:

  • use an EDA tool to design a development board
    • that uses parts from the inventory to interact
    • and communicate with an embedded microcontroller
  • extra credit: try another design workflow
  • extra credit: simulate your design
  • extra credit: design a case around your design

What EDA?

EDA (Electronic Design Automation) refers to the software tools used for designing, simulating, verifying, and testing electronic circuits, printed circuit boards (PCBs), and integrated circuits (ICs). These tools help engineers automate complex design processes, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and manufacturability.(From ChatGPT, Prompt: What is an EDA?)

I decided to continue using mainly open-source software, so I chose KiCad as my EDA tool. There are other options available such as EasyEDA or Eagle but both are closed source and lock some fetures behind a paid version.

I had already used KiCad before but it was quite limited. A good source for me to get started was this video from Fab Lab Reykjavík however it is in icelandic.
