Laser Cutting

Introduction

Parametric design in SolidWorks enables the creation of a customizable box puzzle by defining key dimensions with parameters. This ensures flexibility in modifying the design without manual adjustments. The final design is prepared for laser cutting by exporting vector-based files.

Software used

• SolidWorks (for parametric modeling)
• After designing the model , convert the files in to laser cutter supporting SVG, DXF, or AI file formats

Step-by-Step Procedure

Create a New Parametric Part File

• Open SolidWorks and create a New Part.
• Use Equations (Tools > Equations) to define key parameters:
• Box Length (L)
• Box Width (W)
• Box Height (H)
• Material Thickness (T)

Design the Base Panel

• Sketch a rectangle on the Top Plane.
• Define its dimensions using L and W.
• Extrude it to T thickness using Boss-Extrude.

Design the Front & Back Panels

• Create another sketch for the front and back panels.
• Ensure proper interlocking joints align with the side panels.
• Dimension using L, H, and T.
• Extrude to T thickness.

Export DXF or SVG Files

• Save each part as DXF (File > Save As > DXF).
• Ensure proper scaling and verify dimensions in laser software.

Prepare for Laser Cutting

• Flatten each part using SolidWorks Sheet Metal or Export as DXF.
• Arrange pieces in a laser-friendly layout.

Test on Scrap Material

• Load the DXF file into the laser cutter software.
• Perform a test cut using a low-power setting.
• Check fitment before cutting final material.

Finalize and Cut

• Adjust laser settings (speed & power) based on material.
• Execute the final laser cut.
• Assemble the box and verify the fit.
