Information from the Handbook

Printing

The Fab Lab Rvk has 4 main printers that are in normal operation. That is three Prusa i3 and one Prusa i4. I did all my printing for this assignment on the i4.

3D Printing Project

I wanted to use beads for a fidget weight on a rope.

Design Constraints

Process

I used 15% infill with 0.20 mm layer thickness for all prints. The final process change was setting the slicer to print the infill first.

The Process that makes this difficult to subtractive is that fact that I add the bead on the print 3/4 of the way through. I also add the rope in mid way to make it easier to work paracord. This project is to be printed with no support and with 2 pauses in the print.

Pause 1 - Place the rope in the through hole. Pause 2 - Place the bead on the piece.

Below each color represent a different stage in the printing of the final design of the object.

Pause 1 Pause 2 Pause 3

Iterations

I did 6 print and 3 design iterations before I got the parameters correct. Also, it took me this long to realized that I need the up piece to print from the inside out and not the outside in.

Iteration 1 Iteration 2 Iteration 3 - Final
Iteration 2 Broken Prints Close up

The final setting that got me the result I wanted was under Print setiings > Infill > Advanced > print infill first.

Why is the difficult to make substractively?

This is difficult because of the process of adding the bead. It is the process of pausing the print that make it difficult. Also, using a non uniform object like blown glass requires flex ability in the product. Printing is great for trial and error and iteration.

Scanning

I used Kiri to scan an object, Kiri’s Website.

My Favorite Hat

What I learned

When using Kiri it is important to have patience. The first scan I tried was video scan but I think I was spinning the object too fast so you couldn’t see the object at all. Then I tried photo scanning byb taking 100 pictures. This improved the quality of the scan 15 fold.

What I will do differently Next time I want to rig the object using fishing line to ensure that only the object I want to scan is included. Also. we have the creatly scanner at the lab and I want to try to use that one. I am curious about the difference between the two methods.
