About
Moonlighter FabLab
A 501(c)3 non-profit S.T.E.A.M. Learning Center and Fabrication Lab
in Miami Beach, Florida dedicated to empowering makers with the
skills, tools, and opportunities to shape a better future.
Fab Academy
The Fab Academy is a fast paced, hands-on learning experience
where students learn rapid-prototyping by planning and executing a
new project each week for 20 weeks, resulting in a personal portfolio
of physical and digital technical skills. The program is lead by MIT
professor and director of the Center for Bits and Atoms, Neil
Gershenfeld. It is a globally distributed program based on the MIT
course, how to make (almost) anything.
Fab Foundation
Formed in 2009 to facilitate and support the growth of the
international fab lab network as well as the development of regional
capacity building organizations. The Fab Foundation is a US non
profit 501(c) 3 organization that emerged from MITs Center for Bits &
Atoms Fab Lab Program. The mission is to provide access to the
tools, the knowledge and the financial means to educate,
innovate and invent using technology and digital fabrication
to allow anyone to make (almost) anything, and thereby
creating opportunities to improve lives and
livelihoods around the world.
Instructors
Tom Pupo
Tom Pupo is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Moonlighter FabLab. For over 9 years, it has provided an open and accessible space for developing and testing new projects that bridge academic inquiry and economic opportunity. Tom has also served as a professor at the FIU Honors College, FIU College of Architecture and the Arts, and The Idea Center at MDC. These programs use placemaking as a means of affecting positive social change in public spaces while serving as a real-world technical education platform for emerging student designers and engineers. Tom earned his Masters in Architecture from Florida International University where his research focused on the social, economic and cultural impacts of the convergence of design, technology, and digital fabrication.
Peter Perez
My name is Peter, and the first thing you'll probably notice about me is that I am pretty tall. Once we get past all that you'll probably ask the usual, and find out I am a Cuban American with an affinity for good strong coffee (with espumita) and freshly baked bread. For my day job I am the Associate STEAM Director at Belen Jesuit Prep School down in Miami, Fl. Nowadays I spend most of my time in the fablab tinkering with robots and multitudes of creations teaching students to do the same. On my off time I read, build, cook, adventure, and explore whatever strange idea may pop in my head (last week it was those protein bagels people were making on instagram).
