16. Wildcard Week#

1. determine what to do#

This time, we decided to use a machine to do the embroidery. I wanted a small, stylish tote bag, so I decided to embroider the fab academy logo on a plain tote bag that I bought at a hundred-dollar store.

2. Tools to be used in this project#

  • Janome HyperCraft 900

    • Janome’s HyperCraft 900 is a high-performance computerized sewing machine with embroidery functionality for beginners and advanced users alike. 176 embroidery designs and 200 stitches are built in, with convenient features such as touch panel operation, automatic thread adjustment and automatic thread trimming.
  • shishu pro next

    • Embroidery PRO NEXT is an embroidery data creation software offered by Brother, a highly functional tool that converts photos and illustrations into embroidery data to create original embroidery designs.

2. data creation#

  1. bring up the tool with the software installed. This software requires a physical authentication key; please make sure the key is connected to your PC.

  2. start up the software and open the logo data to be used in this project.

    Warning

    • Only BMP files can be opened.
    • If you have prepared a non-BMP file, you can open it with the Windows Paint tool, change it to a BMP file when saving, and save it.

  3. Check that the embroidery you have loaded is correct. At this point, you can select the background type from the left side. In this case, there is no need to do so, so select “Next” as is.

  4. Position setting. There is no need to touch this setting, as it will be adjusted later. Select “Next” as it is.

  5. select Auto Punch from the toolbar above.

  6. the color of the embroidery can be selected in auto-punch. Since the final embroidery color (thread) must be physically selected, it is sufficient if some similar color is selected. You can change the maximum number of thread colors in the lower left corner, or you can exclude colors from the color palette on the right side by clicking on the colors you do not use. When settings are complete, click “Done.

  7. change the scale of the embroidered image. Select the edge of the target image and drag & drop to change the scale.
  8. Characters can also be added as embroidery. You can enter text from the top toolbar > Layout > Character Array.
  9. the simulation can be performed by pressing the play button below.

  10. Once the settings are complete, save the file. The file extension for saving is “JEF”.

Warning

  • The sewing machine will not recognize the file unless it is placed in the “Emdf” folder.
  • Remember to place the files in the “Emdf” folder.

3. sewing machine preparation#

Software setup#

  1. sewing machine out.

There is a USB connector on the side. Connect the USB memory stick with the data you just inserted.

  1. follow the screen to set up the settings. At this point you do not have to select anything in particular. Check the screen that pops up and if there are no problems, proceed. The screen that pops up may say “Please raise osaide”. To raise the osaide, you need to raise the bar on the back side.

Then load the file. - ⑥. Touch the folder symbol. - ⑦. Select the target file. - ⑧. Check the image and if there is no problem, please proceed. - ⑨. Set is complete.

Preparing Templates#

  1. select a template. There are two sizes: large (RE20a frame) and medium (SQ14a frame). In this case, we used the SQ14a frame.

  2. prepare the cloth to be set on the template. Cut it to the required size and fix it to the template.

Once the fabric is fixed to the template, fix it to the sewing machine.

Check samples made in the past to see how they are sewn.

Perform a trial stitch#

Finally, you can start sewing. 1. the display that says “move template to center” will appear on the sewing machine screen. Follow the prompts and the template will move to the center. After moving, press the Start & Stop button to start trial sewing.

  1. measure the trial-stitched embroidery and cut the fabric in the area to be sewn. Apply double-sided tape around the holes to secure the fabric for the main stitching.

  2. secure the fabric for the main stitch. If necessary, use masking tape to secure any areas that may move.

Perform the main stitch.#

  1. select a thread that matches the color.
  2. sewing steadily
