18. Invention, intellectual property, and income

Overview of week 18 assignment

  1. Individual assignment
    1. Invention, Intellectual Property, and Income
      1. Develop a plan for dissemination of your final project
      2. Complete your final project, tracking your progress:
        • what tasks have been completed, and what tasks remain?
        • what’s working? what’s not?
        • what questions need to be resolved?
        • what will happen when?
        • what have you learned?

A. Invention, Intellectual Property, and Income

Like many Fab Academy students, I decided to license my project under Creative Commons. This project started from my curiosity, and for now, I don’t have enough skills or knowledge to develop it more. Also, I’ve been feeling a bit tired of capitalism these days. So instead of making it for profit, I want to share it freely and let anyone improve or build on the idea.

Creative Commons (CC) is a set of free licenses that let creators share their work while giving others permission to use it under certain conditions. It provides a simple, standardized way to grant copyright permissions to your work — letting you keep some rights while giving others away.

Using the checklist on the Creative Commons Chooser site helped me select the right license and generate the appropriate license code or public domain marking based on the type of work. I chose CC BY, which allows anyone to use, modify, and share my final project, as long as they give proper credit.

B. Dissemination and future update plan

While my original goal was to design and build a mobile 3D printer, this plotter can work as a base for future development.

After completing this project, I plan to:

  1. Improve the mecanum wheel control and explore relative and absolute position tracking systems
  2. Design and build a filament recycling machine (like this) to learn about extrusion and heat control, similar to 3D printing
  3. Integrate these elements into a mobile 3D printer

Although I’ve learned a lot through Fab Academy, collaborating with people from different expertise will be important for making further progress. (Contact me if you are interested in!)

C. Final project progress

Tasks not completed:

  • Pen plotter bracket attached to the servo motor
  • G-code sender (Processing) based on the week 14.
  • Endstop bracket

For details on the progress, please visit Final Project | Electronics Design & Production and Final Project | Assembly and Testing.

Final project

I added links to the temporary slide and video files in my root directory.

3. Files

Files will be put on the final project pages.
