Naoki Hayashi
I'm an industrial designer based in Tokyo, with a passion for computational design and digital fabrication. I majored in industrial design at university, learning about aesthetics, usability, and a bit of engineering, and I'm currently working as an industrial designer at a company that manufactures construction machinery.
What I'm into
-
Computational design
I've been interested in computational design using Rhino Grasshopper. I started learning Grasshopper as an extension of my work as an industrial designer, but gradually my interest shifted to creating organic shapes from mathematical or parametric procedures like fractals and shortest paths. -
3D printing
I've also been fascinated by digital data being transformed into analog ever since I started using CNC and 3D printers at university. In recent years, I've been designing and printing objects for everyday use and some of them are available at Printables.
-
G-code experiment
An experience where my two interests intersected was when I created a Grasshopper definition to convert drawings into toolpaths and ultimately into G-code, in order to use a calligraphy pen-equipped 3D printer as a pen plotter. This experiment sparked my interest in controlling and possibly "making" 3D printer, rather than just using as instructed.

Industrial design
And of course, I'm still interested in industrial design, which I think is about the connection between technology and humans. I love design that successfully combines both human and technological factors.

Fab Academy
...and I joined Fab Academy 2025 at FabLab Kannai, because I wanted to not only be a designer, but to be an engineer, maker and designer who could design and build every aspect of things.
