Naoki Hayashi¶
Hi, my name is Naoki Hayashi (林 直樹), Fab Academy 2025 student at FabLab Kannai, Japan.
My background¶
Where I am from¶
I’m from Yokkaichi, port city in Central Japan, where is known for petrochemical complex and Somen noodles.
Education and current job¶
I majored in industrial design at the university in Nagoya, Japan, where I studied industrial design related to aesthetics, usability, and a little bit of mechanical engineering. I currently work as an industrial designer for the company that manufactures construction machinery.
What I’m into¶
1. 3D printing¶
In recent years, I’ve been into designing and printing everyday objects like desk and kitchen organizers, clamp hooks, etc. I’ve uploaded some of them online (Printables). Please feel free to print them!
2. Computational design¶
I’ve also been interested in computational design using Rhino Grasshopper. I started learning Grasshopper as an extension of my work as an industrial designer, but gradually my interest shifted to creating organic shapes from mathematical or parametric procedures like fractals and shortest paths.
3. G-code¶
One experience where my two interests intersected was when I created a Grasshopper definition to convert drawings into toolpaths and ultimately into G-code, in order to use a calligraphy pen-equipped 3D printer as a pen plotter. This experiment sparked my interest in controlling and possibly “making” 3D printer, rather than just using as instructed.
