Use a mouse!
The three most important things:
Zoom: rotate mousewheel
Orbit: press mousewheel and move mouse
Pan: press ⇧ + mousewheel and move mouse

Blender knows where your mouse-cursor is!
Monkey tower

G Grab
R Rotate
S Scale
Add → mesh → cylinder
or ⇧ + A → mesh → cylinder
⇧ + Rightclick to move the 3D-Cursor
