aboutMe

Hello! My name is Dora, and I’m a grade 12 student at Hisar School in Turkey. I plan on studying Computer Science in the Netherlands after I graduate. My love for coding and computer science started around three years ago when I realized I could get into coding games and create ones similar to the games I loved. I tried out Unity and actually realized that it wasn’t really my thing—I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I kept exploring other fields of computer science, this year I have been specifically interested in cybersecurity and web development. Recently, I made a graphing calculator using JavaScript for a school project, and I found it quite fun to work with HTML, CSS, and JS. This process also reawakened my passion for game-making.

Ideation for My Project

During the same years I got into computer science, I also discovered my love for literature and philosophy. I wanted to create a game that would explore the themes of life, death, and the passage of time (which also inspired my final project, which I explain more in depth here). I chose a sea animal because I’ve always felt that the ocean holds a deep connection to time and weight that comes with it. There are sea animals that live for decades, far longer than any of us will. And even something as simple as a seashell has been carried by the waves for who knows how long. It might have come from miles away, lived a full life, died, and eventually washed up at my feet. The idea that I’m holding something that’s traveled through so much time and space — that’s possibly older than anyone around me — makes me think whenever I go to the seaside.

Motivation for Fab Academy

In the past few years, I’ve worked with different coding languages and gained some familiarity with certain fields of computer science. But I have no experience with many of the topics included in this program. It’s almost all new knowledge for me, and I’m both very excited and a little nervous to take on these challenges. I’m excited for this oppurtunity to experiment with new things.
