Week 12. Mechanical Design, Machine Design

Group Assignment

Automation of lathe Machine “Einhell”

alt text

This week we worked on making the EINHELL lathe machine automatic, like a CNC. There were three of us, so we divided the work.

  • I was responsible for the Design
  • Zhirayr did the Manufacturing
  • Derenik worked on the Electronics

Disassembling the machine.

The first thing we did was start disassembling the machine and carefully cleaning all the parts because the machine had not been used for a long time. It had a lot of dust, and all the lubricated parts were covered with dust and grease particles.

Design Part.

I thought for a long time about where to start the design. I was thinking about modeling the whole machine to begin making changes, but I was very lucky and found a full 3D model on grabcad.com

alt text

After downloading the file, I opened it in Fusion and started carefully measuring the model on the real machine. I wanted to check if there were any mistakes or misalignments to see if the model design was good.

alt text

Luckily, the whole model was well designed, so I opened a new project in Fusion, placed all the parts that needed changes, and started making all the changes.

The main task was to make an adapter to hold two stepper motors.

alt text

I started designing the parts that stay on the machine and planned all the holes on them. I also tried to fit the stepper motors to understand where they would be placed and how they would be attached.

alt text

I also added a housing for the bearings to avoid friction of the shafts, which we later milled using the CNC roughing machine.

Here is the part what we need to make using cnc milling machine.

Before making part from aluminum we decided to print first.

After printing we assembled it on machine and it looks perfect!!

Here is the final result we got from aluminum.

All the other parts and how we milled everything can be seen in Zhirayr’s documentation.

Future Improvements

In Future, we are planing to remove the backlash on the X-axis because it affects the precision of the movement and makes the tool less stable during cutting.
