Week 7¶
Credits to ChatGPT for generating the definitions. I have used the prompt Generate the defination of *your word*
to generate all the definations. To generate some explantions for the softwares, I have used the prompt Can you explain further on *the name of your software*
.
Vocabulary¶
Dog Bones - In Fusion 360, dog bones are fillets or relief cuts added to internal corners of a design to compensate for the round cutting path of a CNC machine. Since end mills are cylindrical, they cannot create sharp 90-degree internal corners, so dog bones ensure that parts fit together properly in CNC-milled joints like tab-and-slot connections.
CNC - A type of machine tool that uses a computer to control the movement of tools to fabricate parts. It automates manufacturing processes like drilling, milling, and cutting.
Toolpath - A series of instructions or movements that a CNC machine follows to cut a design. It defines the route the tool takes during the machining process.
Fixture - A device used to hold the workpiece securely during the machining process to ensure precise and repeatable results.
Tabs - Small uncut portions of the material left in the design to hold pieces in place during the milling process. They are later removed.
DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) - A file format used for representing 2D and 3D drawings and designs. It’s commonly used for CNC machining.
End Mill - A cutting tool used in CNC machines. It has cutting edges on the sides as well as the tip, and it’s used to remove material from the workpiece.
RML file – A file format used by Roland milling machines for defining toolpaths.
Software¶
Shopbot 3 Software¶
ShopBot 3 (also known as ShopBot Control Software v3) is the software used to operate ShopBot CNC routers. It translates design files (such as those created in CAD/CAM software) into machine-readable instructions (G-code) to control the movement of the CNC router.

VCarve¶
VCarve is a CNC software developed by Vectric that helps users create toolpaths for ShopBot and other CNC machines. It is mainly used for 2D and 2.5D machining, such as engraving, carving, and cutting.
