18. Applications and Implications, Project Development¶
Indevidual Assignment¶
- Propose a final project masterpiece that integrates the range of units covered.
Your project should incorporate: - 2D and 3D design - Additive and subtractive fabrication processes - Electronics design and production - Embedded microcontroller interfacing and programming - System integration and packaging.
Where possible, you should make rather than buy the parts of your project.Projects can be separate or joint, but need to show individual mastery of the skills, and be independently operable.
See Final Project Requirements for a complete list of requirements you must fulfil.
The answers to the questions in the checklist will allow you to create your BOM (Bill Of Materials).
Project Development¶
Complete your final project tracking your progress.
1) What will it do?¶
My touch screen magic mirror will be a screen that displays the time and weather that is also touch screen.
2) Who has done what beforehand?¶
A magic mirror has been made many times in history but not making it touch screen.
3) What will you design?¶
I will be designing the IR frame that makes the screen touch screen and I will be designing the case that goes around everything.
4) What materials and components will be used?¶
I will be 3D printing the frame that’s holding the IR LEDs and then I will be CNCing the actual frame that I will make pretty around the mirror. The screen behind the two way mirror and the two way mirror will be bought. If I have one, the stand will be made by me either laser cutter or 3D printed
5) Where will they come from?¶
- The PLA will come from Bambu Labs
- The two way mirror and the screen are from Amazon
- Other parts are from the Charlotte Latin Lab like the raspberry pi
6) How much will it cost?¶
I plan to spend a max of $100 on this project due to the fact that our lab already has many of the parts that I need and can use.
7) What parts and systems will be made?¶
The PCB and the frame will be made by me.
8) What processes will be used?¶
I will be using the raspberry pi code that people already have and then use IR led code that’s already made and then expanded on them to connect them together.
9) What questions need to be answered?¶
I need to figure out how to make a grid of IR leds that will read your fingers and connect to the screen that I already have.
10) How will it be evaluated?¶
I think that this should be evaluated based on the functionality of the touch screen.
11) What tasks have been completed?¶
I have set up the screen and the raspberry pi. And if I wanted to I could make it turn on when a human walks up to it
12) What tasks remain?¶
- Frame with IR leds
- CNC pretty frame
13) What worked? What hasn’t?¶
My screen works pretty well and the fact that I can see the screen when it’s on through the mirror but when the screen is off I see myself means that that is also working.
14) What questions need to be resolved?¶
Same as before with the questions that need to be answered is that I need to know how to connect the IR frame to the raspberry pi screen.
15) What will happen when?¶
I plan on continuing my documenting and finishing that soon and also finish putting together the magic mirror. I will also continue to make and code the IR frame.
16) What have you learned?¶
I have learned a lot on how to mill a PCB board and understanding code that I didn't write and that I found online so that I could edit it and add to it.
