Tips and Tricks for Completing Fab Academy¶
Here are a bunch of tips and tricks I learned during Fab Academy through watching my peers’ experiences and my own personal experiences.
-
Your final project will take significantly longer than you anticipate.
-
It is a good idea to plan everything out before doing it.
-
Going back a step is often easier if you are struggling to move forward.
-
Do not be afraid to ask for help. However, if you ask your peers for help, you have to be willing to return the favor.
-
Stay on top of your documenting. Documenting can become a very tedious task the last few weeks if you have procrastinated it the whole time. Stay as caught up as you can on all the weeks because trying to cram it all the last week is rough and could result in you not finishing the program on time.
-
Work on your final project as much as you can throughout the weeks. Don’t just do random tasks during the weeks (ESPECIALLY INPUT WEEK AND OUTPUT WEEK) because it will give you way too much to do later on.
-
Choose a good final project that you will be proud of and hopefully not hate by the end of it.
-
Choose a good machine week project that you think through before starting immediately. During machine week, choose a team leader just to help keep everythign organized and divide tasks evenly with deadlines. It is important that everybody stays on top of their work or the group will have issues finishing and will have arguments.

If you are a Mac user, converting and compressing pictures is very easy. In Finder, if you click the mousepad with two fingers on the picture you want to convert and compress, there is an option under “Quick Actions” to “Convert Image”. By using this tool, you can convert a png to a jpeg and compress the image to a smaller file size in just one step. You can even do multiple images at once and rename them at the same time.
