15. System Integration

Individual Assignment

  • Design and document the system integration for your final project

PCB Case

I decided to make a case for my PCB in Fusion 360 to help give it a finished product look and conceal the wires. Currently, my final PCB is not fully designed yet, so I made the case with parameters, so I can change the dimensions later.

Here are all the parameters I used:

I also wanted it to have a lid and since I am probably going to be including a lot of pin headers, I made some holes in the lid. I also made a hole for the power source to be plugged into the microcontroller.

Case

Back in CAD Week, I made a rough design for my game, and I am stil interested in making my final product look like this although the interior layout will need to be different.

Final without LED holder, touch sensor holder, or top:

Final with only LED holder:

I am still figuring out how I am going to make this case, but last year in Engineering 2, I made an infinity mirror, and I think the method of using the table saw for that worked well. Using the laser cutter is also a possiblity.

Flowchart

On the bottom of my case, I created a spot for the PCB and a spot for the battery back to go.

Then, I placed the PCB and battery pack in their respective spots. There is a little hole in the battery pack spot for the battery pack wires to come out, and those are connected to the ground on the microcontroller and the switch that is in the switch hole on the outside of the box.

There are also two platforms inside of the case for the LED holder to rest on top of.

Final:

That is the LED holder I used. The two small holes are for the LED legs, and the bigger hole is for the touch wire.

Then, the touch wire went up through the touch wire hole, and the tip went through the tiny hole in the acrylic top.

Once the wire was through the hole in the acrylic top, I placed a piece of copper tape on the bottom of a copper BB and soldered the wire to that copper tape.

Then, for the final product, I put the remaining walls on the case and pushed all the BBs down so that they were flat against the surface of the acrylic top.

I had also designed a spot for the screen in the case, but I did not end up using the screen in my final product.

Here is a rough visual of what this would look like:

Reflection

This week gave me a lot to think about, but I think it will end up being beneficial for my final project. I will definitely be making modifications to my current designs, but I feel like I have a good starting point.
