Assignments for the Week

Group Assignment:

  • Design a machine that includes mechanism + actuation + automation + application.

  • Build the mechanical parts and operate it manually.

  • Actuate and automate your machine

  • Document the group project.

Link to our group assignment is here

Individual Assignment:

  • Document your individual contribution.

For the machine designing week we all had contributed in one or another way and it was really a fun and also tiresome at sometimes when machine didn’t turn out to our expectation. Despite some initial failures, our project was sucessful in the end with much support from all the group mates and also from dedicated instructors who gave their full support and guidance for making this project to become sucessful.

My contribution to the group:

  • Design & Fabrication:- Designed the wood casing for the automated Yarn spinner using fusion 360 and fabricated using shopbot machine.

  • Designing and 3d printing:- Designed the gears and some other components which are required for the machine and 3d printed them.

  • Assembly:- Assisted the group in assembling all those components together and was also involved in doing trial run of the machine before making the final product. In addition to that I was also involved in arranging and cutting some of the components required for the machine manually which was not possible to do away with CNC machining.

Before we actually start up with our machine designing project, me and my friend Dorji Gyeltshen started sketching and designing some of the components required for the project.

Attached below are some of my contributions for this project:

1. Designing Crown Face Gear

Initially while starting up the project, what we had decided was to include crown face gear in our system which plays a vital role in rotating the thread on the bamboo stick for the yarn spinner but later on what we had decided was to omit that design and replace with the spur gear.

  • For designing the crown face gear, I used fusion 360 tutorial and followed some of the steps mentioned below:

I opened the fusion 360 and created sketch of circle with different diameters

I then extruded the dimension for the addendum and dedendum for the gear after selecting different planes.

I then created the circular pattern and added the required number of teeths for the gear

Finally I was able to make the crown face gear.

2. Designing the Spur Gear

Along with designing crown face gear, I had also designed the spur gear for the machine designing project using fusion 360.

3. Designing the frame or support for the thread

Inorder to make the unrolled yarn to get it rolled with ease without any obstacle, we tried to make stand for it where it can hold our yarn firmly so for that I designed the frame for that. For the designing I used fusion 360.

4. Designing the guide for the yarn

This attachment which is known as guide for the yarn was made so that the thread can be displayed evenly on right to left hand side of the bamboo which prevents from forming cluster or ball of yarn.

5. Designing the wooden casing for the Yarn spinner

At the end after we finished assembling all the components together, inorder to furnish our look of machine and to beautify it further, what we had decided was to provide a complete casing so that all the moving and roatary equipments will be enclosed inside. So for that I along with Bir Maya had designed the casing and fabricated using shop bot machine.

Finally after fabricating the casing using shopbot machine we assembled them together with all the components enclosed inside.

Learning outcome of the week

  • It was a great moment to work in a group whereby we got an oppurtunity to share and exchange lots of ideas and skills while working together.

  • By working in a group, I had come to know that anything can be achieved with good team work spirit.

  • It was a great oppurtunity for everyone of us to showcase our individual skills and put it into group project whereby at the end as a saying goes “good seed yields good crop” like wise whatever we had put in had resulted in good result.
