Applications and Implications

What does it do?

The Fab Fab Volcanic Shoes encourage the user to keep on moving to see different colors in the platform of the shoes or the user will experience a light version of earthquake and lava eruption.
The Fab fab volcanic shoes have a microcontroller that reads acceleration data from an ADXL345 sensor and prints the X, Y, and Z values to the serial monitor. It maps these values to RGB colors for an 8-pixel NeoPixel strip, updating colors in real-time. If acceleration values change by less than 1 for 4000 milliseconds, it activates an LED and vibration motor for 3000 milliseconds and displays a smooth, 5000-millisecond lava color show on the NeoPixels, ensuring responsive and frequent updates throughout.

The shoes will display a Neopixel RGB light show when the person is moving in blueish colors depending on how the person is moving, getting signals from the z axis in the accelerometer.

If the person stops moving for more than 3 seconds (same signal from the accelerometer x times), then the person wearing the shoes will sense an earthquake (vibration from vibration motor for 2 seconds and the lava will start flowing around the shoes, (with colors from the lava) see image.
// 1 (254, 120, 10)
// 2 (254, 116, 0)
//3 (240,90, 0)
// 4 (244,54, 0)
// 5 (250,30,0)
// 6 (250,20,0)
// 7 (253,10, 0)
// 8 (255,0, 0)

In the future it could also potentially>

Work in the way that the XIAO will then send a signal to the built in website “ Eruption has started.”

And if the button is pressed, then the shoes will reset the code and start again.

As a designer, you first have to understand how shoes land with each step, how the wearer can balance and also the ergonomics and dynamics of how to ensure comfort and support – it’s all about working with the foot. but of course our intention was also to create a shoe that explores new possibilities in terms of design and manufacturing techniques. all these aspects have been carefully considered as a whole, and I don’t think one is more important than the others.-Zara Hadid

What questions were answered?

Can someone with no shoe making experience make shoes
absolutely.
How to integrate different outputs and inputs

What worked and what did not?

The lights on the shoes worked, the fashion aspect on the other hand did not. There was only enough time to do half the pair but the half that got made worked fine and were stable enough to stand on.

How was it evaluated?

User testing: My sister really liked the shoe although it was quite hard to get in and out of since the epoxy and denim were pretty solid. Next version could be a little softer.

The shoes are not exactly comfortable but they do work and are both wearable and walkable.

What are the implications?

Educational shoes.
Shoes that are more than shoes. The plan is to use these shoes to establish a deeper connection with the children of my island with our history.
