Group work for week 10

We programmed the SEEED XIAO RP2040 to control a short NeoPixel LED strip. We measured the current used with four different colors, full white (255,255,255), half blue (0,0,125), full blue (0,0,255) half green (0,125,0), full green (0,255,0) half green (125,0,0) and full green (255,0,0). We have also measured the current through a servo motor, a stepper motor, a solenoid, and a large solenoid.

We used a device that could measure the current of an item that needs max 5v and current limit to 100 mA. It had USB input and output. We inserted the measurement device between the computer (which provided the current) and the microcontroller.

Figure: USB measurement

For the multimeter measurement, it was used for bigger voltages and currents. For suppling those electronc components, we used TLP power supply, which can supply up to 30 V and 5 A. We measured the voltage in parallel and the current in series.

Figure: Current measurements with an usb .

The table below lists the power consumption of the tested electonic components connected to the microcontroller. The values are the ones measured with the multimeter.

Item Voltage (V) Current (mA) Power (W)
Neopixel white 5.07 V 90ma-640ma all pixels 0.45-3.24 W
Neopixel half blue, green, red 5.08 V 60ma-117ma all pixels 0.3-.59 W
Neopixel full blue, green, red 5.08 V 60ma-260ma all pixels 0.3-1.32 W
Servo 5.07 V 40 mA 0.2 W
Stepper 12 V 500,800,1100 mA 6-13.2 W
Solenoid 25 V 175 mA 4.375 W
Big solenoid 25 V 800 mA 20 W
