i want to make a fab goodie... thats a wish i had since academy STARTED. so i am to do screen printing. i want to make a tshirt this week.
Design and produce something with a digital process (incorporating computer-aided design and manufacturing) not covered in another assignment, documenting the requirements that your assignment meets, and including everything necessary to reproduce it. Possibilities include (but are not limited to):
During this Wild Card Week at Fab Academy, I'm exploring screen printing. Instead of the traditional emulsion screen printing, I'm opting for stencil screen printing using the roland gx-24 vinyl cutter available in the lab.
Schematic representation of the film preparation technique screen printing
Screen printing is used across various industries such as apparel, textiles, signage, packaging, electronics, fine art, promotional products, automotive, ceramics, glass, and medical devices. It's employed for printing designs, logos, graphics, and information onto a wide range of substrates including fabric, paper, plastic, metal, glass, and ceramics.
VIDEO ABOUT STENCIL SCREEN PRINTING
take the surface where you want to screen print. take measurement for designing.
i took a white tshirt as it don't require base coat.i took measurement of the surface using a scale.
size: width-280, length - 390
what i can design?. we had blue. red, black and green in our inventory. so i thought let's design our "fablab kerala" logo.
i took inscape and started designing. i took the logo from saheen's DOCUMENTATION.i added logo in fab's iconic colours and a text saying "fablab kerala" in bLACK.
I ADDED THIS REFERENCE MARK TO AVOID OFFSET. THE FONT USED IS KEEP ON TRUCKIN WHICH HAVE A FUNKY FEEL TO IT.
ADDED AN OVERALL FILL SO THAT I CAN GET THE WHOLE SCREEN CUTTED OUT.
NOW I NEED AN WAVY TEST, FORT THAT TAKE PATH EFFECTS FROM PATH.
CHOOSE LATTICE DEFORMATION BY SEARCHING.select the text you want to deform
go to selection tool. now you can see the grid.MAKE ADJUSTMENT AS NEEDED.
now we need to flip the design so that we get correct impression on tshirt.don't forget this step.
this is the final design . now i need to fragment the design according to different colour layers before sending to vinyl cutting.
fragmented design according to colour
remember you need marking on all vinyl sheet then only you can allign when doing colour
i did this additional layer for marking which i can stick on tshirt for allignment. but this was a waste step!!!. i could have taken this from other sheet and trasnfered.
vinyl cutted the above design using our ronalnd gx - 24 and fabmods. vinyl cutting is documented in the WEEK 3 - COMPUTER CONTROLLED CUTTING week.
i cutted each design using the vinyl cutter and made it ready.
keep the printing surface on level surface. i took a CARDBOARD sheet and put insdie tshirt keep the cloth straight.
my setup
additionally i got cloth clippers to fix the tshirt nicely. this came handy for me!!!!
i clipped it clippers all around for fixation.
this is the trasfer paper we had in our inventory.i usewd thsi sheet for transfering designs.
i sticked the the mark on tshirt first using trasnfer paper.
at first i tried to trasnfer the text.i removed the negative part and unnecessary part from vinyl.
then i sticked the trasnfered paper on the vinyl
i pressed the vinyl on screen using squeegee.next comes the hard part thsi is were my calculations failed
TRANSFERRING the the text was very difficult. the transfer sticker was very adhesive. transferring was difficult
finally i found that text based design on on stencil is a bad idea
i failed. but i want want protect the vinyl . i changed plans. even if i wasted the text. i still have the logo with me.i can print it on chest as a logo.
thankgod i have reference mark ADJACENT to the logo which i can use for marking.
i MANUALLY fixed the marking on tshirt.
now i need to remove some adhesion on vinyl so i can TRANSFER the design smoothly.
“IMG_6929_compressed.mov” could not be found.
me doing this action to remove some adhesion on TRANSFER paper
i took the first part of desing . removed the negative part.
use a squeegee to fix the vinyl on screen.
i ALIGNED the screen with mark . use a cello tape to mask the mark to avoid TRANSFERRING ink THROUGH it.
now take the ink . read the instructions carefully before applying
i applied the ink and squeegeed it to reach evenly. be carefull while doing the process. don't spill the ink it can create a mishap
use gloves when doing the process.
the first part nice !!!
since im doing multicolour, a single screen and i have less time. i need clean the screen and redow the next part.i used the pressure washing station in our lab to clean the screen
with the help of the cleaning station the screen got cleaned well
me cleaning the the screan
the second part
the squeegee process to stick the vinyl on screen and remove bubbles
please don't forget to put tape over mark part.
added the colour and applied it evenly.
put back the remaining colour to the bottle
after APPLYING the second part
since i washed the screen and it was not dreid properly we can see bubbles in the print. sop for the third part i need to dry the screen properly before using.
use a pressure gun to remove excess water dampening.
and use toilet paper to clean the rest of the water.
finally air dried using a hot air gun.
use different gloves for different colour so that you can avoid MISHAPS!!.
MEANWHILE the transfer paper become really and smooth after using many times on after another(using same TRANSFER paper THROUGHOUT).
the last colour which is green looked off-texture. i don't know why. please close lid of fabric colour properly.
the last came a littel off CENTRE. the PROBLEM caused because i had only one mark . if we put two mark we could have avoided this issue.
use a heat air gun to dry the print. wait for 24 hours (idea temperature) . wash and use
final result
