WEEK5 3D scanning and printing
Group Assignment
test the design rules for your 3D printer(s)

Individual Assignment 1
design and 3D print an object (small, few cm3, limited by printer time) that could not be made subtractively.
3D Printer
Ender 3 Pro
The work I will print.
I will 3D print a pill case using a plastic bottle cap. I will create two independent compartments by placing a divider wall in the middle.
First, create a thread to close the pet bottle cap using the Coil command.
To split the bottle into two compartments, connect the middle of the bottle with a bridge.
1.Offset the center portion of the pill case.
2.Draw two line segments that span the diameter of the pill case.
3.Use the Linear Pattern command to copy the line segments in the Y+- directions for the length of the radius. The offset value is 0.4mm.
This is a technique used when 3D printing a shape to bridge two points A and B.
Exporting STL File
Slicing by UltiMaker Cura
UltiMaker Cura is free, easy-to-use 3D printing software. Fine-tune your 3D model with 400+ settings for the best slicing and printing results.
Download from: https://ultimaker.com/software/ultimaker-cura/
Before starting the output with a 3D printer, it is useful to use the Preview function of Cura to examine whether the output will be performed correctly.
- 3D printing allows the creation of complex internal structures and hollow shapes by building up material layer by layer.
- Overhanging shapes and geometries that cutting tools cannot access can be produced.
- Different materials can be combined and integrated into a single object.
- Lattice and cellular structures, which are difficult to make by conventional machining, can be freely created.
These are difficult to achieve subtractively.
Through this assignment, I was able to learn about the importance of designing with an understanding of the characteristics unique to 3D printers. 3D printers have advantages and limitations that traditional manufacturing methods do not, and I believe it is crucial to design with these factors in mind.

Scanning
Stat scanning. I put a PET bottle on a turntalbe.
Done.
Uploading OBJ file to Sketchfab
I was unable to upload the 3D scan data captured with a 3D scanner from my PC to Sketchfab. It seems Sketchfab has a 100MB limit on file sizes that can be uploaded.
So I decided to use an app called Meshlab to reduce the number of meshes.
1. After launching Meshlab, import the data through "Import Mesh" under the "File" menu.
2. From the "Filter" menu, select "Remeshing, simplification and reconstruction" -> "Quadric Edge Collapse Decimation".
3. Enter the desired number of faces in "Target number of faces".
4. After that, press the Apply button.
5. The appearance did not change much, but the file size was greatly reduced.
