16. Applications and Implications

Group assignment:

None

Individual assignment:

  • Propose a final project masterpiece that integrates the range of units covered, answering:

  • What will it do?

  • Who has done what beforehand?
  • What will you design?
  • What materials and components will be used?
  • Where will they come from?
  • How much will they cost?
  • What parts and systems will be made?
  • What processes will be used?
  • What questions need to be answered?

  • How will it be evaluated?

  • Your project should incorporate:

  • 2D and 3D design

  • Additive and subtractive fabrication processes
  • Electronics design and production
  • Embedded microcontroller interfacing and programming
  • System integration and packaging.

For this week I’ll try to answer the applications and implications of my final project.

What will it do?

For my final project, I decided to make a medical emergency bracelet. This bracelet, which I named MEDICO-ARMILLIS 1.0, is a medical monitoring bracelet for people suffering from chronic illnesses. It is also an emergency alert bracelet (in case of crisis for certain pathologies).

The idea for this project came to me as a result of a disturbing observation. According to the world’s health authorities, more than 60% of deaths in the event of a crisis could have been avoided if the patient had been treated quickly.

In 2012 I saw my friend die of a seizure because he hadn’t received the care he needed. Based on this situation and all the other observations I made, I wanted to create this project to help prevent such situations.

Who has done what beforehand?

I looked at the projects of other fabacademy students, and noted at the relevant project.

What will you design?

I’m going to design a box I’ve called ANGOUANBOX that can take human body vitals and eventually contact people in an emergency.

What materials and components will be used? / Where will come from? / How much will they cost?

It took me about three months to complete and design the project.

What questions need to be answered?

  • Is the communication protocol reliable?
  • Do the design materials match the working environment of a fab lab?
  • Can the ANGOUANBOX module take care of people’s vitals?

How will it be evaluated?

  • Check whether the ANGOUANBOX is able to read a person’s temperature.
  • Check that the ANGOUANBOX is capable of displaying the readings on the screen.
