About me

Hello! I’m Alana Duffy (she/her) and am a 17-year-old student at Charlotte Latin School. I’m currently a Junior (class of 2025) and life is a bit hectic right now, especially with Fab Academy. But my love for all things engineering is whats brought me to this point. I’d say my grandpa, Roger Dale Hiatt, is the main reason I’m so impassioned about engineering. It has endless possibilities and anyone who works hard enough, regardless of their background, can achieve incredible feats.

Outside of engineering, you can find me painting, exercising, hanging out with friends, or with my horse, Dominga, that I compete with in hunter/jumper equestrian events.

My background

My engineering background thus far is rather short… but it is dense. The summer before my sophomore year of high school, I took my school’s Rapid Prototyping summer camp and decided to continue pursuing engineering. That year I then took Engineering Design Methods 1 and 2. Certain that I was hooked on engineering, I decided to explore different areas of engineering I may like. During summer, I first took a Brown University PreCollege class, Renewable Energy Engineering: Wind and Solar Power. Next, I was apart of Cornell University’s CURIE Program for women in stem where we did research. I also spent a week as a teaching assistant at my school’s Young Engineers of Today summer camp. Currently, I have just completed my first semester of junior year where I took Civil Engineering and am now taking Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering.
