Group Assignment : Computer-Controlled Cutting

The CAMM-1 GS24 is a Vinyl cutter from Roland.

Setting Up for Screen Printing:

I used the color mapping feature in the software to assign specific cutting speeds, power, and frequency to different colors in my design. The below example shows constant power and variable speed and DPO. This actitivty help me understand the cutting sequence and ensured that each part of the design was cut under optimal conditions.
I adjusted the RGB values to matrix, which allowed for to understand raster in much bettter way and control parts of the design.

For intricate designs, the speed and power settings are critical, using lower speeds for detailed cuts and higher speeds for broader areas.

The CAMM-1 GS24 has a simple interface to initiate cutting jobs, with easily accessible buttons for starting (‘Go’), pausing, and resetting operations.

‘Set Home’ function is particularly useful for establishing a reference point before beginning a job and cutting at different starting points.

What is Kerf?

Kerf refers to the amount of material that the laser removes when cutting. Its simiar to width of the laser beam itself. It’s the gap that the laser creates as it slices through the material.

Why is Kerf Important?

Knowing about kerf is essential for accuracy in your designs. If you ignore kerf, pieces that are meant to fit together might not. For the Parametric Design i subracted the kerf from the thickness . It affects how tight or loose the parts of your project will fit together after cutting.

How to Account for Kerf?

When designing your project, you should slightly adjust the size of your joints or slots to account for the kerf. Measure the kerf of the laser cutter by cutting a test piece and then use this measurement to adjust your design.

Tips for Managing Kerf with the Epilog Mini Cutter

My instructors advised to always perform a test cut on the material to determine the exact kerf size for the specific settings you’re using.Adjusting design file accordingly, taking into account the kerf width for precise fitting parts.Remember, different materials and different laser power/speed settings can change the kerf size, so it’s not a one-size-fits-all situation.
