Applications and Implications

What will it do?

My purpose is to build a mechanical flower that interacts with passersby through the HC-SR04 Ultrasonic sensor that will ditect distance, once people come closer than 50cm the flower lamp will open up.

Who has done it before?

Similar projects have been done before, here are some of my inspirations.

inspo

This project from a previous group project in waag fab lab

What will you design?

The Physical Components:
1- The wooden block (where the motion sensor is attached)
2- The cone (home for my motors and PCB)
3- The petals (moving and fixed)
4- The shaft that will transfer motion from motor to petals.

The Esthetics Components:
1- Using of an Iridescent film that will reflect light.
2- Using a wooden solid block which I picked carefully.

The electronics
1- PCB with a connector to be connected to distance motion attached to flower base.

What materials and components will be used, where will they come from & how much will they cost?

Out-sourced Material Source Cost
Wooden block local market 10$
USB cable local market 2$
XIAO-SAMD21 Microcontroller digikey 5$
PVC Iridescent film Amazon 20$
HC-SR04 Distance sensor local market 5$
4 motors local market 30$
Adapter for the motors (5 volts) local market 7$
female dc adapter local market 1$
female header connector local market 2$
Clear Resin Local market 150$ per 1 Liter (estimated resin used in my roject is 400ml) which is approximately 50$ for what I printed
Total approximately 137$

What parts and systems will be made?

Object Quantity material
Motors clamps holding petals 4 3D print with resin
Cone 1 3D print with resin
Petals from 2.8mm acrylic 8 laser cut
Iridescent film cut 8 pieces manual cut

What processes will be used?

  • Fusion360 (2D and 3D design)
  • Electronics Design
  • Computer controlled cutting
  • Input and Output Device
  • Embedded Programming
  • Electronics production
  • Laser cutter

What questions need to be answered?

Two main questions: can my motor hold my petals? and is the shaft i designed capable of holding moving the petals!

How will it be evaluated?

Through testing my motor with a prototype flower and shaft.

Project plan

I changed my plan for my final project after many weeks, therefore I only started working on my final project for few weeks only.

my project plan is as follows:

  • 11- May 2D Design for petals & 3D Design of model with fusion 360.
  • 25 May laser cutting of acrylic sheets to create petals and laser cutting of the bending surface from MDF.
  • 28 May Testing light transfer in acrylic sheets with PVC and bending acrylic sheets with heat.
  • 01 June printing of the cone and the shafts and PCB design.
  • 03 June Asembly of parts and PCB milling and soldering.
  • 10 June Programming.
  • 12 June Slide and video.
  • 14 June Presenting.
