17. Wildcard Week¶
Week 17 · 2023.05.10-2023.05.17
This is a week dedicated to fabricating a project based upon the special features that lab has to offer different to those of other labs. Since Fablab Ciudad de México has several robotic arms (Kuka) and that the professor in charge, our very own tutor, Rodrigo Shiordia has worked on developing through several iterations, plastic and clay extruders we opted to work on extruding with the big format plastic extruder.
Previous requirements¶
In order to be able to fabricate a piece with the robotic arm and large format plastic extruder we should take in account:
- The design should take in account a single exterior wall, that should be built as a single spiral from bottom to top
- In order to avoid that a warping effect loosens or sets free the piece in the first layers, some adhesives such as spray mount and probably some masking tape should be applied to keep it stable and sticked to the table
- Keep the size under one meter in diameter
- Take in account the time of printing, since it should be printed in one go.
- Overlap must be near to 50%
Design¶
I came up with a swirling vase with differentiated size of protrusions and notches. In section it curves into a soft ‘s’ shape and grows in size while approaching the top.
Production¶
The full length of the piece initially designed was 345 meters, what it was finally printed was 95 lines out of 150 with a length of 172.88 meters. The total time printing of 6 hours. The total weight of the piece is of 3.2 kilograms.
