About me¶
Hello! My name is Virginia Foster but I go by Ginny. I am a 10th grade student at Charlotte Latin School, and also as you can tell a Fab Academy 2023 participant. I have been participating in Charlotte Latin engineering since 7th grade, and when I got into high school I took Engineering Design Methods 1 and 2. This year I took Electrical Engineering and am currently taking Bioengineering. I love building things and have always been pretty good at problem solving which is why I think I like engineering. When not focusing on school, I love listening to music, attending concerts, watching movies, building Lego sets, and taking care of my four cute guinea pigs. I am also an avid reader and I enjoy photography.
Previous work¶
Before Fab Academy I have participated in a few different engineering competitions and programs. I competed in e-Cybermission in two different years. In 2018-2019 I competed with three women to create a horse trailer lift, which as a prototype was functional but because of the limited time we could not build a life size prototype. That year my team and I won first place in the state of North Carolina, but did not advance to regionals or nationals. The following year (2019-2020) I competed again with one member from last year, but we were joined by two new members, one of whom is participating in Fab Academy this year, Dariyah Strachan. That year we made a thermo-electrically powered fan to remove carbon dioxide from cooking huts in Uganda to prevent carbon dioxide poisoning. Again because of time and resources available we could only build a small scale prototype but our project was successful. That year our team and I won first place in the state of North Carolina, we won first place in regionals for our region, and we ended up going to nationals. Our team was in the top five of all projects submitted for the 7th grade. Unfortunately we did not win at Nationals, but we were very proud to have made it that far. I have also participated in two years of Girls Who Code. I could could also not have done any of this without the encouragement and support of my teacher, and 2021 Fab Academy graduate, Mrs. Barbara Morrow.
