This week introduced us to one of the greatest technologies besides 3D printing, it is 3D scanning. The idea of having the design of a real object whether it was organic or geometrical scanned to your computer screen is mind blowing. This opens up many possibilities in design, once I have seen a company that 3D scans the trunk of any car, then design shelves, mechanisms, or anything according to the customer requirements that fits perfectly with their car. No need to contact car manufacturers to get the dimensions of the trunk nor the need to do the tedious work of manually measuring the trunk. This application can be applied to virtually anything. My background in 3D scanning is minimal, however I consider my self to be well knowledgeable in 3D printing.
