17. Applications and Implications

Assignment

Propose a final project masterpiece that integrates the range of units covered.

Your project should incorporate:

  • 2D and 3D design

  • Additive and subtractive fabrication processes

  • Electronics design and production

  • Microcontroller interfacing and programming

  • System integration and packaging.

Where possible, you should make rather than buy the parts of your project. Projects can be separate or joint, but need to show individual mastery of the skills, and be independently operable.

Learning outcomes:

  • Develop a project plan

What will it do?

The goal is to design and create a machine that can squeeze a mask with a bag valve. to give the patient who was having breathing problems the air they needed. Switches and sensors should be used to provide a “straightforward on/off switch” for the interactivity.There shouldn’t be a requirement for in-depth user interaction.

Who’s done what beforehand?

The ApolloBVM Project from the Rice University is a good example of what im trying to accomplish / replicate using a PCB as the controller.

What will you design?

I will design:

  • The body (wooden frame)

  • The PCB board

  • The compression mechanism

What materials and components will be used?

  • Plywood

  • Electronic components

  • PLA for 3D printing

Where will come from?

Material and components will come from local purchases and foreign purchase. Local will mainly be plywood and electronics will be purchased international and shipped in from Digikey and Amazon.

What parts and systems will be made?

  • The body (wooden frame)

  • The PCB board

  • The compression mechanism

What processes will be used?

  • Computer Aided Design for design. Fusion 360 will be used for generation of the CAD files

  • Laser cutting will de used in the production of the frame (body).

  • Milling will be used in the production of the PCB board.

  • 3D printing and productions of the gear and piston for the compression system with PLA.

  • Soldering.

  • Output devices for servo and display system.

What questions need to be answered?

Will the design provide the necessary air/oxygen to assist someone breathing?

How will it be evaluated?

Once it is able to pump air
