19. Invention, intellectual property and income¶
We must decide this week whether to file a patent or a license in order to protect our original ideas. Since my project doesn’t, in my opinion, involve an invention, I don’t think a patent is required. Patents are more often used for things that are difficult for everyone to produce and manufacture. If all went according to plan, anyone and any Fablab should be able to readily recreate my project by following specific instructions.
I’ve always supported open source because I think it’s crucial to spread the knowledge we have. I chose to keep my project open source for this reason.
The wonderful thing about open source software is that it provides users the freedom to use, examine, modify, and distribute it for any reason. This can help the program expand significantly and quickly because anyone can edit and share their modifications.
Creative Commons License¶
Quoting Wikipedia: “A Creative Commons license is one of several public copyright licenses that enable the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted “work”. A CC license is used when an author wants to give other people the right to share, use, and build upon a work that the author has created”
Types of CCL¶
There are 6 types of CCL, which are:
- Attribution:
The Attribution license is the most fundamental and liberal of all Creative Commons licenses. As long as the original author is properly credited, you are free to use, alter, and distribute the work. Even using the work for profit is permitted. The Creative Commons Attribution license’s requirement that “due credit” be given to the original work’s creator is crucial to comprehend. It’s critical to do this correctly because it forms the cornerstone of any license agreement. What must be done to satisfy the criteria for acceptable credit is as follows:
What the creator’s name is If given, a copyright notice If one is given, a licensing notification If given, a disclaimer notice a reference to the primary source
- Attribution-ShareAlike
With the extra requirement that you also license your work under the same conditions, this license grants you the same usage rights as the typical attribution license. This implies that both you and others may use the original work in the same manner.
- Attribution-NoDerivs
This license has a few more limitations. Even though you are still free to use the work in both commercial and non-commercial projects, you must not alter it in any way and give due credit to the author.
- Attribution-NonCommercial
You can use, modify, and distribute the work under the Attribution-NonCommercial license as long as you give the author of the work due credit. The restriction on using the work for a commercial product makes a difference in this case.
- Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike
The Attribution-NonCommercial license is the foundation of NonCommercial-ShareAlike licensing, with the additional benefit that your work will be licensed in the same manner.
- Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs
The last license is the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs license, which prohibits the use of the original work in commercial enterprises and does not permit any editing of it.
I want my project to be “Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike” licensed. Everyone will be able to use it for non-commercial reasons in this fashion, and whatever they alter or change will also fall under this license.
Project Dissemination and Monetization¶
I plan to work on two parallel tracks in future.
First, I will develop the project to be 3-axis, and change the means of communication to 5G. Then, I will use it in our Orange 5G lab to showcase the benefits of using 5G and how data transmission (video stream) is seamless via 5G.
On the other hand, I will contact factories who work with soft materials, like eggs, and customize a gripper for their needs.
