Output devices

For the group assignment, we had to measure the power consuption of an output device and we decided to measure the consuption of a red LED.

For doing so, we used the digital multimeter and Andrea's board.

Multimeter

A multimeter is a measuring instrument that can measure multiple electrical properties. A typical multimeter can measure voltage, resistance, and current, in which case it is also known as a volt-ohm-milliammeter (VOM), as the unit is equipped with voltmeter, ammeter, and ohmmeter functionality.

To measure the power consumption we used a digital multimeter on the 10A mode. The black test lead is inserted into the COM terminal (center), and the red test lead into the A terminal (left).

The black test lead and the red test lead.

The output device we chose is a servo motor, so we built the control circuit on the breadboard.

To take the measurement we have disconnected the positive cable of the power supply and switched it with the black test lead, the red test was attached to the GND. Knowing that the power supply voltage is 5v, we can calculate the consumption in watts:

W = V × I
W = 5 x 50 mA
W = 5 x 0,05
W= 0,25
