17. Applications and Implications¶
Propose a final project masterpiece that integrates the range of units covered.
Your project should incorporate:
- 2D and 3D design.
- Additive and subtractive fabrication processes.
- Electronics design and production..
- Microcontroller interfacing and programming.
- System integration and packaging..
- Where possible, you should make rather than buy the parts of your project.
Here we start to focus and plan by details for the final project
The idea
¶
For a long time, I want to create projects that promote the Arabic culture in a fun way like a playboard so after searching I decided to make a puzzle lightbox something interactive.
Who's done what beforehand ?
This idea came after we worked on one of my favorite projects in FABLAB JUBAIL is the interactive board that we created for the national Saudi festival day.
We create an interactive playboard to explain to people the identity of the Saudi national day and the idea behind it was very funny and everybody liked it including kids they came to play and ask about the idea so they play and learn ).
One of the most beautiful projects that are near to my idea is Nadiah’s final project and the one that inspire me
The design
¶
The project will consist the following :
- The lightbox (structure) by CNC machine.
- The pieces of the puzzle by laser cutter.
- The boxes for puzzle by 3D print and stand and sone Acrylic holder to hold the sheets.
- and finally, I will design the circuit by using a milling machine.

creating processes
¶
-
My playboard will work line by line I have 12 lines with 12 LED strips so if you arrange the puzzle pieces in good order and all the pieces attach very well together it will conduct the electricity and the LED line will ON.
-
WS2813 Addressable RGB LED Strips:
The addressable led has 3 pins I connect the power and ground together and for data pins I connected with Atmega separately each strip with Each addressable LED.
What processes will be used?
I start creating the main construction in my project by Using 9mm PLYwood cut with CNC to be strong enough to hold all the sheets that I need then I start designing and cutting the different sheets I will explain it sheet by sheet
- Sheet No 1. The LED panel
for this sheet, I use 2mm MDF and cut it with a CNC machine.
- Sheet No 2. Semi-transparent Acrylic
for the next sheet in using semi transport Cut it by laser machine, I chose to use this material to give the fade mode for the light that comes from the LED strip .
- Sheet No 3. The Puzzle pieces
For the puzzles, I use transparent Acrylic with engraving drawings by laser machine so with the engraving the drawing will be more clear after the light turn ON the drawing I choose the Arabic manuscript with a flat pieces puzzle to be in the modern style.
- The frame
with a laser machine, I cut 6mm white acrylic to create a frame on the top.
- Sheet holder
I design the small 3d holder to hold the sheets inside the box.
- Puzzle pieces boxes
to make my puzzle easier I design 12 small boxes by numbers so that if the players want to start playing they can arrange the puzzle by lines depending on the puzzle box and print it on a 3D printer.
The main idea for my project is in the led strips The LED work line by line , each piece of the puzzle piece I cover it with copper tape to make it an electronic conductor if the all puzzle piece comes together the LED will turn ON, I plan to use 12 LED strips with 12 data pins so I decide to use an Atmega microcontroller to be sure will turn on all the lines pixels very well with external 5V power.
Evaluation
¶
I can say the project will successfully work if all puzzles come together and turn on the LES Strip and if the players will have fun and feel the challenge and they see the Arabic calligraphy mixing with digital fabrication.
Wrapping up
¶
At this point, I am almost finished with the fabrication part and I order from an international store that already has all the electronic components.
