4. Computer controlled cutting

Assignment

group assignment: characterize your lasercutter’s focus, power, speed, rate, kerf, joint clearance and types

individual assignment: cut something on the vinylcutter design, lasercut, and document a parametric construction kit, accounting for the lasercutter kerf, which can be assembled in multiple ways, and for extra credit include elements that aren’t flat

Group Assignment

Our group collectively tried to get the Trotec at Dassault up and running this week, and the laser cutter was not ready in time. Unfortunately, I Zoomed into our meeting and could not be there in person due to taking care of two little humans who are sick. However, fortunately, we completed the assignment because I am at home and have a Glowforge Pro laser cutter. Though, on February 16, we will need to do this again on the Trotec laser cutter.

Individual Assignment

Cut Something on the Vinyl Cutter

My vinyl cutter at home is not working. I am familiar with the process and will use images and videos to share what steps to create a vinyl sticker.

Steps needed to cut using Roland Software:

  • Use an .svg file. You can create one yourself, in Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, or any vector graphics editor you prefer.

Blackdog Farm SVG

  • Import file into Roland Cut Studio.

  • Print. Image below is proof that I know how to cut, with layers. This is here until I have access to a vinyl cutter.

Design, lasercut, and document a parametric construction kit

This week I used the design I created last week to create a parametric construction kit. I adjusted the size of the kerf to fit the piece of wood I was cutting.

Calibrated Wood

I purposely made two of the kerfs off center, and two on center. As I was starting to play with the ideas in Montessori toys, of their being intuitive components with how to build.
