18. Applications and Implications¶
Assignment: Propose a final project masterpiece that integrates the range of units covered, that includes
- 2D and 3D design
- Additive and subtractive fabrication processes
- Electronics design and production
- Microcontroller interfacing and programming
- System integration and packaging
What Will it Do?¶¶
The idea for my project changed from my initial idea. This project will use a color sensor to scan a person’s clothing for a particular color and then change the neopixels in the skirt of the dress to reflect the same color.
Who Has Done What Beforehand?¶¶
Although many different wearables have been designed, I have not found a dress that incorporates this same idea. The closest I found (and uses the same sensor) is this scarf project on the Adafruit website. In this version, the sensor is hidden in the actual scarf and you expose it to sense the color of what you are wearing.
What Will I Design?¶¶
- A dress sewn from scratch (I will use basic white cotton fabric for this initial proof of concept version)
- A cuff or bracelet that will hold the sensor
- Boards to run the sensor and neopixels
- Jewelry to incoporate into an outfit
- A power source to be able to use the project without an outlet/computer
What Processes Will Be Used?¶¶
Process | How will I use it? |
---|---|
Electronics Production | Using the skills learned on how to properly and effectively mill the boards I will use to run my project. |
Electronics Design | Useing the skills learned to design boards correctly for use in my project. Researching the components used will be a big part of the design process to make sure they function correctly. |
Molding and Casting | Using molding and casting to create a wearbale to hold the components? Or use it to create an accessory to go along with the project. |
Output Devices | Using neopixels in the project to display the correct functioning of the sensor. If designed correctly, the neopixels color will display what the sensor is reading. |
Input Devices | Using a color sensor to capture readings. These readings will then be sent to the neopixels in the design of the dress. |
Embedded Programming | Using programming to run the boards I will design. |
Networking and Communication | Testing methods for a newer version of the project - can I get it to run wirelessly? |
What Questions Will Need To Be Answered?¶¶
- Does the sensor work in sensing the correct color?
- Does it have a power source that is effective and will last a while? Does it need to be replaced often?
- Is the dress washable?
- What happens if a neopixel stops working or a wire comes loose? Is it easily reparable?
How Will It Be Evaluated?¶¶
The project will be evaluated based on whether or not (1) the color sensor actually senses the correct color (or a close range of that color) and (2) does it display that color onto the neopixels of the dress?
